I googled California laws a few days ago and it was a bit ambiguous regarding non-physician involvement in another person's suicide, but simply being a member of a forum didn't seem to be illegal. You should have a look to make sure for yourself, though. (I'm in Europe so I just skimmed the information about California.)

i think we're safe. we did not encouraged anyone to suicide. discussing our own plans is not illegal. these pro lifers simply cannot stand the idea that someone who was suffering is not suffering anymore.

You're freaking me out honestly even tho I had no involvement in her goodbye thread or any goodbye threads nor provided much in the way of "resources". Shutting down the site is one thing but in the unlikely event there were actually some concerted effort to come after individual forum members that would, ironically, cause a HUGE surge in suicide attempts/completions. Threatening already suicidal people with jail? Yeah...now that would be a true catalyst.

My apologies - I didn't mean for what I wrote to be alarming to anyone. I'm not inciting or encouraging anyone to do themselves harm, so as I understand it I'm not doing anything illegal even by California law. The rules of the forum likewise forbid encouraging, inciting, etc. so ... so don't do that.

I looked up the location of the sanctionedsuicide.com server and it's located in Montreal Canada. So no worries about it being in California like the original alt holiday suicide server.

I think just California. That California law didn't pass like 2-3 times federally.

Even still I think what we are doing is pushing the upper limits of free speech. But this media attention was bound to happen sooner or later. If they indeed succeed in shutting down this site then so be it. I think going after it's members individually would be over kill and it would cause many on here to commit suicide in an untimely fashion.

Is SS gonna be okay?

I don't want to stir anything further than I've seemed to at this point, but I truly enjoy this forum and I don't think outsiders understand the appreciation the users share for this site.

I don't want to see SS go away and I hadn't experienced a scare before the most recent one.

How can we prevent this?

I was really happy that I was able to find the site today because I assumed it would have been taken down or gone dark.
However, if the admins wanted to um, make the site not appear in google searches for awhile, just in the interest of self preservation til the media bullshit dies down, I would think that a very prudent decision.
You can't hide it from law enforcement, no doubt they are watching just to make sure we aren't bullying and murdering children, as the media claims. But hiding it from google searches til the media attention dies down would cut down traffic from concern-trolls, looky-loos, amateur sleuths, etc. No new members for a few weeks, but it would give you a better chance of preserving the site as-is for your existing membership.
I anticipate a potential onslaught of concern-trolls and petitions for removal in the next few weeks, as the mommy-blogs pick up the story. Maybe just make it harder to locate for a few weeks, til their puny attention-spans get distracted by yet another issue they can't comprehend and which is none of their business, to go poke their fat noses into.

I dunno. I'm new, that decision is above my pay-grade.

yeah, I'm just posting from a cheap phone and I barely have the tech skills for that. Oh wait, they do maks VPNs for phone. I used one once and google got all pissy with me like "WHERE ARE YOU??? You have been signed out because your IP just did something fuckin' weird!" so I uninstalled it.

I've read the FQA. It says this site uses overseas servers and if news articles come out or there is any publicity to not worry because it can't be taken down. Everyone just needs to calm down and remember why this community is here in the first place. Nobody is advocating for anyone to commit suicide and if you are then fuck you. It is just a place without censorship that suicidal people can talk on without fear of judgement, involuntary hospitalization or losing everything they have in life.

I hope this forum stays. After reddit SS getting shut down, this is the only pro-choice place I know. Regarding the facebook post, I think the parents need someone to blame and have a scapegoat. It's a way to cope with their loss. It's hard for them to comprehend the need for such a site as this, because they most likely haven't been suicidal themselves.

Oh and reading the comments on the Facebook post is just sad. They call us accomplices in murder, that we should be arrested, etc. Not to mention the countless shallow platitudes such as "praying for you". How delusional do they have to be? They only start caring when it's too late. Please, save it. Why the fuck can't humans have a dignified way out, when they couldn't even have chosen to be born?
