They did mention this forum by its name, actually. Pretty much all people that are trying to register as a result of that article are expressing genuine intentions to join this community. The New York Times essentially lead hundreds of possibly desperate people - in the age of endless lockdowns - to a website that discusses peaceful methods. It's the most irresponsible thing they could have done considering their narrative about this website but I think "suicide prevention" isn't that important if you can boost traffic towards your article that way, right... Regardless, this article doesn't fulfill any journalistic standards, I've rarely seen such a grotesque article before.

Agreed, it was very sensationalistic and disrespectfully invasive. Showing the deceased's bedrooms. So I guess we can expect our bedrooms to be published online for the world to see then? Get those decorations in guys! Also the cinematic style with which they changed the background and therefore mood when displaying the comments on here.

I also love how they NEVER allow the deceased a voice. One of the users (I believe it was Shawn) gave some excellent arguments for Pro-choice and how she is not a victim of this site, but this grown woman was not allowed a say in this conversation? Countless times they do this - the suicidal are silenced and not given a voice because we're what - irrational and out of our minds? Yet if you read the posts here you'll know it's not true and even if we are of ill logic, we are capable of debate and reason.

I had never heard about SN, until one day I saw an article in on a news website in my country where they carried out a police operation to arrest people who allegedly helped others to commit suicide.
In the article, they clearly showed conversations between a person who committed suicide and members of the group, mentioning SN, CTB.
After I saw this article, I easily found the SS.

I think, like me, thousands of others are looking for a less painful way to do the CTB, and now with this story on the NYT we're going to have a lot more people joining the SS.

Here I found a place to speak freely, without fear or censorship, everything I feel, respecting the pain of each one. Listening to other people and opinions, and all this has done me good.
The pain of each one of us is legitimate.
Whether with or without CTB, the best is always wanted here.

They are concerned with censoring to try to lower the suicide rates, when in reality they are just selfish and don't want to deal with their relatives' problems. Wanting someone who is suffering to stay is not love. It's selfishness.
I'm exhausted hearing from people that I'm strong and that everything will get better. I can't see the beauty in all this misery in my life.

This shit is so insulting in my opinion not only to the people here but to those that are dead. They are acting like the people in this forum can't think for themselves. You're loved ones were not stupid! No one forced anyone to sign up for this site, no one forced anyone to research or ask questions pertaining to suicide. If someone wants to die they are going to make it happen either way, what's next? Trying to have the entire internet banned? Going back to the Stone Age? Things in this site can just as easily be found by internet searching. The lack of understanding that no one and I do mean ABSOLUTELY NO ONE can make someone "pull the plug" on their own life is ridiculous! it's an extremely difficult mental hurdle to get over regardless of information collected on a method.

For many of the people here, this site probably prolonged their life because they have an actual non judgmental space to vent out their feelings. I know for me, I don't WANT someone trying to convince me why THEY feel life is sooo fucking dandy and worth it, I want people who can understand why it's not and don't try to push their goddamn agenda on me.
I am getting so sick and tired of people in this world thinking they know best for everyone else and trying to stick their faces in other peoples choices. I may lack compassion here, but that 17 year old lied about his age to gain access to this website and that is no one else's responsibility but his and his parents for not minding what their child is doing on the internet. As for the adults, they are adults, they make their own grown up choices - that's like trying to hold an entire town responsible for someone committing a murder.

This is completely tunnel vision, so focused on this website out guilt or grief, that I bet none of them have actually looked at stories about individuals that were given the means to die by doctors and they are still here, it actually saved their lives by knowing that they just had the choice and were heard!

What maddens me the most is how they talk about the young people, appealing to parental emotions, as if suicide is a problem merely because the young ones are killing themselves. Under 25? Oh, such a tragedy! Over 25? Well, people die anyway, don't they?

It's stupid how they try so hard to demonize Marquis and Serge.

I don't know much about them. All I know is that they have created a space where people can be truthful, feel free to talk and meet other people that can understand them.

To have this idea and as far as I know as a computer scientist, create and maintain a forum like this is no little shit.

Well, I don't know them either and, even though they created this site, I wouldn't defend them without knowing their intentions with this place. I have seen people who take pleasure when seeing others suiciding and that scares me. Maybe no one is innocent.

They mentioned SN (not by name though). Hope this doesn't cause increases regulation of the product.

And I am sure they obligatorily attached the national suicide prevention hotline number, Which I have personally called many times.... and police were sent to my door by the crisis line operator. As IF that will help my PTSD, which largely comes from Cops nearly killing me, on 6 different occasions. With Tasers and Glocks etc etc

Side note: If you dial that number... I hope you get the help I never did.
Better choice might be, WARM lines. As opposed to HOT line.
Their goal is to deescalate distressed persons before we go completely overboard.
And has been working well for me.

I hope this article doesn't spell the death of this site. People who aren't there don't understand how much support networks like this do to keep people alive in the first place. Having a place to come back to after having a stay at the hospital where people won't look at you funny. Where people understand. A place where people won't try to "fix" your problems, but will listen and support you either way. I've never seen anyone encourage anybody else to ctb, though I haven't been here long. This place is a great resource for people who don't have anybody else who understands. Writing that article without understanding the people that use this site was irresponsible, as was publishing the name in general. This place is a safe haven for countless around the world.

If any of these dummies are reading this, I recently was found by police on a bridge, advised to contact mental health services. So I did. I got a letter saying that I basically wasn't deemed a suicide risk. How do these two events exist?

I've been on and off this site for ages, most of the time it's talked me down from a terrible mental health crisis and I've felt way way better. Its actually very helpful for me to speak to kind people offer actionable advice not "don't do it man!! You should try CBT!" So I can easily say it's saved my life multiple times, actually.

Oh I have no idea who she is. I just checked out their page after it was mentioned they have one. I don't even have a Twitter, just looked out of curiosity and saw that comment and thought it was extremely rude and wanted to point out irony on their page, especially when they are talking about teenagers and bullying is one of the main reasons teens commit suicide but yet the allowed a comment like that on their page against suicide.

It is important to remember that these journalists generally stand for nothing beyond advancing their careers.

As an example, I remember a reader calling out a journalist who had written a big exposé about the ecological damage caused by the aviation industry, then the next week a travel blog boasting about her latest flight to a balmy paradise. They write enough hot air to make sea levels rise.

It would be interesting to do some investigation into these journalists. Which NY high-rise do they luxuriate in at night? How abundant are their love lives? Which prestigious university did mummy and daddy pay for them to attend? Who is the latest celebrity that they have flirted with?

Let me tell you about my day. I just got back from a 16-hour day driving a truck in heavy Melbourne traffic. Secretly yearning for freedom, watching normal people live reasonable lives, fantasising about being able to sleep or eat good food. I come home to a pigsty of a house which I never have the energy to clean. No good friends, no family, no handouts from daddy, no partner, various health issues, and the income I get is only enough to buy trinkets because living costs are so high and I must be conservative to account for the total lack of support. People have complimented me for making it to 40 and admitted that they would have not made it this far. (And, I will add, my story is a day at the beach compared to some others here. My heart goes out to you all.)

Needless to say, our sheltered journalist friends should check their privilege, as they would likely run screaming to jump in front of the next train if they had to endure just one week of this. Show some integrity or fuck off.
