What substances do you use? How does it help you?
Do you use alcohol and or substance as a stress/tension reduction strategy? Does this help you in the short term? Does it make things worse in the long term? Has this lead to alcohol and substance use issues? Has anyone received treatment or gone to rehab for this? Anyone here sober or abstinent?
For those taking benzos - are they prescribed for you? Do you take as directed?
For those that are sober - what triggers getting help/sober?
How long have you been sober?
How many time did you relapse if at all?
Are you happy now?
So what is substance use disorder or do I have it? According to the DSM 5
DSM-5-TR Substance Use Disorder Criteria
Substance use disorders span a wide variety of problems arising from substance use, and cover 11 different criteria
The DSM-5-TR allows clinicians to specify how severe or how much of a problem the substance use disorder is, depending on how many symptoms are identified.
According to the DSM and my addictions doctors I meet the diagnostic criteria for severe substance use disorder for more than one substance. That was an eye opener for me. And while I don't want to be completly abstinent I was forced into a situation where I don't really have a choice. Some people on here know my story. If you want to know more please feel free to pm me and I would be happy to share.

- Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to
- Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance
- Cravings and urges to use the substance
- Not managing to do what you should at work, home, or school because of substance use
- Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
- Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
- Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger
- Continuing to use, even when you know you have a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance
- Needing more of the substance to get the effect you want (tolerance)
- Development of withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance
The DSM-5-TR allows clinicians to specify how severe or how much of a problem the substance use disorder is, depending on how many symptoms are identified.
- Mild: Two or three symptoms indicate a mild substance use disorder
- Moderate: Four or five symptoms indicate a moderate substance use disorder.
