Religion is one of the most heavily studied and discussed topics of all that exist, and has been the subject of research for centuries, that has slowly lead to greater and greater amounts of the global population ceasing to believe in it.
Hell was created by a psuedo-consortium of men in the middle east over 2000 years ago, as was the rest of Christian religion. Men who realised that the most effective way to make people act in a moral way and be good people (as they defined it back then) is to make them believe that the repercussions for not doing so are greater than what they experience in life, and greater than what any human could ever inflict upon them. Deciding to CTB was considered morally bad in religious texts for two reasons, one of which is exceptionally relevant right now:
1. Nobody really knows what happens when someone dies. Dead men tell no tales, so nobody can tell us what happens in death. Encouraging people to die when we have no idea what happens to them just isn't a very morally good thing to do, and the only signs these men knew of about what might happen to people after they die is that they rot away underground, and never return. After that, everything was speculation. We have a slightly better estimate now due to modern science, but ultimately we still just don't know.
2. People killing themselves en masse was a great risk, having large numbers of people was crucial to the way the old world worked even more than now. People are integral to society, and at the time more than ever, division of roles required having a lot of people. More people living their lives to it's conclusion would contribute to more farmers and peasants that could feed and provide for the people, while those better schooled or simply born into a "noble" family by chance could go on thinking about the wider questions in the world, be they scientific, or warmongering, or so on. Society can only advance to less people having to suffer at the hands of poverty if we have enough people to have an effective division of roles. Not only to mention, beyond that, the lay person could be trained into a soldier. Militaries of the time were very low tech, and relied greatly on either military strategy (which was lacking due to the precursors to rank either not existing on a wide scale or ranks being bought rather than earned by proving one's skill at being an officer of some kind, and therefore people that did have any strategic skills or critical decision making weren't necessarily going to be in a place of power where that skill could help the military), and it also relied most heavily on having huge numbers of soldiers.
The more people that CTB due to the awful living conditions of the past, the less soldiers and farmers you have, and while the more moral men might not have even wanted to wage war, any nation would still have to defend against war to protect it's people, lest they get knocked over by the king next door that exploits their "greater morals".
There is no irrefutable evidence that any modern religion is veritably true, and reflects reality. The only evidence that exists is either circumstantial, directly contradicted by the same religious texts that religion draws from, proven impossible by modern science (e.g. the Adam and Eve fable), or doesn't really make sense in the broader scheme of things - one supposed miracle that healed one person in one western country with modern healthcare while millions starve to death in another doesn't seem to make any sense as a work of a higher power.
There is no better time to believe that religion is not reality than before you think about trying to CTB. There is no hard evidence that hell exists, and you shouldn't be afraid of it because you've been told all your life that it does exist.
I'm not trying to attack people's beliefs, I'm trying to comfort you with the notion that there really isn't much reason to believe the horrible things you're fearing. I don't want anyone to CTB unnecessarily, but if you're going to anyway, you shouldn't do so with the fear of something that we have no modern evidence even exists.
I'm sorry if this sounds overly harsh or aggressive to anyone, I don't ever want to be like that. I'm paraphrasing a lot of this from other people and other sources. I just want to make as good a case as I can in one post for someone who's in fear.
I'm really genuinely sorry if this offends anyone that reads this. Please, please don't hate me for this post...
