  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

New to this forum, new to the entire subject.

After reading lots of threads here, it quickly becomes clear that this community uses codes to refer to many things - suicide itself, drugs, people. I assume this is mostly for legal reasons, but it can initially seem a bit like secret club talk.

I *think* I figured out what "CTB" means...that took me about 24 hours (maybe I'm just thick)...a slang reference to public transportation and a euphemism for ending this life. I will share that when I saw the term/acronym used here so much, of course I just googled it ("CTB meaning", etc.). The only references to CTB I found were, um, well they seemed to be talking about something else entirely (involving a sex act I had never heard of before...maybe I have led too sheltered a life. Or just using a crappy search engine. Maybe both.).

"N" I also figured out (though now I'm looking for a source...).

"D" is apparently an individual who is difficult to contact, everybody's asking for his current email or phone number.

"PP" and variants - OK, got that one, it wasn't hard to find.

But there are lots more in use here. So my question and a suggestion...

Is there a sticky post with a list of these acronyms/secret codes? If not, should there be? I mean, yeah, I get it that "D" (whoever/whatever/he/she/it is) doesn't want their contact info broadcast to the world, but if some authority was looking for them (or a source for M, whatever the hell that might be) they're not going to be slowed down much by the use of such codes. OTOH, their widespread use does make it confusing for new folks (I see more than a few other noobs also asking "what's N?").

Just a thought. Now I'll go back to googling strange three-letter acronyms for kinky sex acts I've never heard of...

CTB is catching the bus
N is Nembutal
NN is night-night method
SN is sodium nitrite
PP or PPeH is the peaceful pill electronic handbook

It's just convenient to use the short forms

Welcome...I'm sad to say.

Interesting, when I google "ctb" I get Urbandictionary' "cut throat bitch", a result from Wiki that specifically gives the text preview for "catch the bus" out of many in a list (maybe cause I have this page open?) and no hits about anything involving sex. Some users I've read from think of the long form as "cross the bridge", "close the book", or whatever "verb the noun" combination that appeals to you.

As @Life_and_Death has shown, there is a forum guide (funny how in a state of desperation most people seem to not notice this), and in general I don't think the purpose is secrecy more so than convenience. Typing SN takes a hell of a lot less time and effort than "sodium nitrite", as @jodes2 says. As for D, well, I don't even know the full version there and wonder how many do.

The sex one is usually cbt. Which is also an acronym for a form of therapy.

The reason is not to hide mostly I think. This website is public but the reason is not to use terms as taking your life. CBT stems from other pro choice groups and it's a euphemism as you said. The motive is not to say committing suicide although it's not positive to say cbt either but using those words directly was not preferred so maybe that's why everyone continued the use of these euphemisms and yes to keep unwanted attention. If someone needs it they would be willing to go through these and learn more about it unlike someone who just wants to search how to commit this how to commit that and this wouldn't be popping in usual search because people use those terms so I think it was used for these reasons.
