Discussion Your favourite fictional characters?

As the title says. It seems to me that there are a lot of people here who love escapism in media and fiction. So what are your favourite fictional characters and why?

Off the top of my head, some of mine are definitely Samwise Gamgee, Cersei Lannister and, above all, Elio Perlman (my avatar).

L - or Lawliet(sp?) from death-note. I adore the whole comic there was even a lesswrong blog about it from what I remember, but his deduction was on par with Sherlock Holmes (another favorite), oh and Slippery Jim DiGriz from the stainless steel rat saga.

Theodore Twombly from the movie Her (that's who I based my username off of). I relate to his hopeless romantic nature and his struggle to fill the emptiness and loneliness in his life.

Shinji, Rei and Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Depressed creator and excellent characterization.

Zeke Yeager from Attack on Titan, has a somewhat good ideology.

Askeladd from Vinland saga is overall a compelling character.

Walter White? I mean, drug dealing / manufacturing is a bad business and people die because of it, but it was his choice that really made me see him in a positive light. In the end, he said it himself: I did it for me.
I think the same thing applies to people wanting to CTB too. Choice. Freedom of it.

I'm probably grasping at straws here but the Ashen one from Dark Souls III is one of my favorite fictional characters. They're basically some nobody sent out to do essentially a fools errand, they posses no clout and are of no importance to a dying world. And yet through it all they're the last one standing at the edge of oblivion.

No matter how old he gets, I can relate so much like him. He never changes for who he really is and yeah he can act like a man-child but it goes to show to never be afraid to be yourself and change for who you are. Obviously you have to take responsibility for your life but when things get tough, you will always have that inner-child in you and never let society take that away from you.

Just saw Forrest Gump again the other day and man, I completely forgot about Jenny. She gets so much shit among Forrest Gump fans but I think most people don't take the time to look beyond the surface of her and just make the assumption that she always turned him down because he 'isn't right in the head'. I believe that that may have been the reason in the beginning but to be honest, I think a lot more than that plays into it after a certain point in her life. She doesn't believe she's worthy of the unconditional love he gives her and is scared of what might happen if she does. And I can empathise with that a lot. Her almost ctb scene always gets under my skin. Jenny is a prime example of a fictional character who doesn't see the point of it all anymore and it's evident in the way she lives her life.

Women are not the only human beings able to influence and/or manipulate others... As a proof: Cumberbatch's Sherlock manipulates a woman he met at Watson's wedding in order to get to some killer billionaire (or something along those lines)... And anyway, isn't he "under the spell" of Irene Adler?

True--women are not the only ones, but I was specifically referring to the whole romance/sex thing. When it comes to that arena, women are vastly superior at playing the men as fools than the flip. Whether it's through flirtation, being physically attractive, or some other form of enticement , the number of men falling prey to women always outweighs the flip of that. It's just how we're wired I guess.

I believe you're referring to the Irish chick always dropping the innuendos? Sorry if I'm misremembering. Anyway yes, that's exactly what I find so cool about Cumberbatch's Sherlock! He's able to flip the tables and not only avoid being the hunted, but become the hunter himself.

Sounds about right, but it was more on an intellectual level than being a typical sex-crazed male chasing tail. Also I would still consider Sherlock as the hunter in that situation for a few reasons: he doesn't bang Irene, I don't think he wants to bang her, and he took her pulse when they were having a "moment", which ultimately leads to his victory over her both intellectually and sexually.

I thought of one more: Eeyore. I was going to add the Caterpillar from Alice but it's not really him - it's the entire two books.

I think any shortage of women being manipulated by men is made up for by men beating women up. (The reverse also happens but women aren't as good at it as men are.) It's just different ways of making someone do what you want.
