Would an exit bag using nitrogen be painless?

I know that, in theory, nitrogen asphyxiation is supposed to be painless, because the gas is inert. However, I've seen news reports of people dying painfully in industrial accidents involving nitrogen. So, I'm not quite sure if nitrogen is the most peaceful way to go out.
If it is painless, it would be because you go unconscious before death occurs. Nothing to do with "inertness". Is it painless? Idk. Probably the best person to ask would be one who used inert gas and died.
