i do get that suicidal people are very pain averse and want to end it so ending it with more pain kinda makes no sense so you care about how peacefull it is.
i never been in real dying situation but I did have psychedelic ego death which feels like dying in extreme pain irl and you are sure it is happening.
it is painfull but after you dead there isnt a thing to remember this pain or suffer from it.
it all do not matter after you dead. pain is matters if you can remember it in the future or if you will suffer from it in the future more correctly. my ego death experiences do not making me suffer in the future and i will do them again and they are amazing.
also in extreme distress you have so much adrenaline that you barely feel any pain at all

the most important thing is the percentage of lethality if you really want it

I don't agree. Pain also matters in the moment you are experiencing it. I remember being in a lot of pain after braking my foot while climbing and although I don't consider the memory of the aftermath of my climbing accident as a particularly bad one as everything fully healed eventually the pain certainly didn't feel good while it lasted. And I think it is a lot harder to commit, if you have to use a method that will cause you to be in a lot of pain. It is hard enough to commit suicide as it is, as humans are naturally wired in a way to be scared of death and avoid it at all costs. So it takes a lot of courage to overcome the fear of death. But if you additionally have to worry about being in a lot of pain while dying it is so much harder to commit.

But I'm not in extreme distress. I'm weighing the odds of extreme distress in the hypothetical future if I keep living. If you're in extreme distress, you need to deal with that before committing.

It's a good question. I don't know why I'm afraid of the pain. I guess cause pain to the point of death might be worse than any other pain I've experienced thus far, and if I have the choice, I'd choose to do as much research possible to try and minimize it. Not everyone has the time or luxury.
