I am from the UK but I live in Spain just now so am able to access the site and read the message that the site has been banned in the UK and this is the sites decision they were not forced to do this in any way. Just seems a bit odd. Just wondering why this decision has taken place?

The reason is in my opinion because this site (and many other sites) were forced to make changes from the UK's terrible online safety act that requires that the entire world submit to the UK's censorship because they feel like being a bit more powerful. Rather than defend against the UK's overreach many sites like SS are choosing to block it instead. However some sites like 4-Chan and KiwiFarms are suing the UK government for the overreach.

It's not because of the BBC reports directly.

It's mainly the UK government watchdog Ofcom, who have been saying they think this site should be banned in the UK or shutdown altogether, and threatening to take legal action against this site for violating the new Online Safety Act, which has just come into effect, which is meant to protect minors from coming across harmful content online in all forms.
(This is why adult porn sites now have to do age verfication checks in the UK, such as providing s credit card or photo ID, resulting in the massive uptake in the use of VPNs in the last few weeks).

This site voluntarily closed access to UK users, in order to protect it and its users from this hassle.
As their statement says, the UK government has no international authority or jurisdiction (this site is US based), but they chose to anyway.

As well as the various BBC stories, Channel 4 (UK) aired a 2 part documentary on Kenneth Law earlier this year, "Poisoned: Killer in the post", which focused on his activities on and off this site, and this site in general. There are posts to it on here. Worth a watch imo.

But, as is being routinely reported in the mainstream media in the UK, a simple VPN gets around the situation.

HTH.

Governments should ask themselves WHY so many young people have mental disorders and want to die...
It's easy to accuse SaSu. Politicians should address social problems at the root !! Rather than take all our money with stupid taxes...

Always only scrolled past the British reports about SaSu. Just now finally watched this one, I am not from the UK, but it must be annoying to be a SaSu user in Britain right now. I believe it.

Not really.
(See my earler comment about VPNs).

I never bothered using a VPN until I registered here, and it is standard advice from this site to use one anyway. So I set one up. This was before the UK access to this site was closed off. I was concerned about being traced and welfare checked for trying to source SN and visiting sites like this, and such things.
Now I use it routinely across all my devices for all my online activity. It's great, I wouldn't be without it now.
Now the Online Safety Act is also forcing all adult sites to enforce age verfication checks it has become even more useful. Recommended.

I just googled "Best VPN" or similar. There's lots of reviews out there. Depends if you want free, fastest, very secure, lots of features etc.
They're not underground or illicit, they are used for general online security and have been for a very long time.
I think some of the free ones may have security issues, so would suggest to do some research, and of course be sure to install the legit version and not some virus malware hack.
There's a section on VPNs on this site including recommendations i think.
I use NordVPN. (Not free but does intro offers, can be around 50% off i think).

Edit:
Found the thread.

VPNs are also useful for using search engines when you are effectively in the country of interest. Search engines (esp google) offer up different results to different countries for the same search. 'Nuff said...

How about disbanding it and replacing ir with a proper system like the french have. Somewhere I can see a psychiatrist to help with medication and not a lazy unhelpful GP that knows fa about mental health.

Because the British government wants to encourage the maximum number of people to commit suicide and has therefore instituted a censorship regime that no rational person would ever choose to live under.

Yeah its mental about the Online safety act...ok this is an pretty extreme site ( I don't think it should be banned) but there are loads of far smaller, totally unharmful sites that will shut down from fear. I heard even Wikipedia might shut in uk cos its not monitored enough...not sure if that's actually true, but anyway, messed up.

They're acting like it's so easy to go and order SN in the post. It's one of the most restricted substances in the UK now.

It's not like in 2018 when you could freely buy it from amazon.

It'd help if mental health services in the UK were any good but they aren't. That's down to the electorate only electing scum.
The public doesn't give a shit they just want us to kill ourselves in private and not upset their rail journeys or motorway journeys.

coming from the uk - the investigations/threats the site owners have received from our government plus the new online 'safety' act are probably two huge contributors. its really a bunch of bullshit to be honest.

Basically, the BBC portrays this site as an evil mind control laser that brainwashes otherwise mentally healthy people into suicide.
It couldn't be further from the truth. You're not even allowed to encourage suicide on here, just to talk earnestly about it.
Keir and his cabinet of cunts think that censoring suicidal people's speech somehow makes their problems go away.
https://www.openrightsgroup.org/campaign/stop-state-censorship-of-online-speech/ for more on why the Online "Safety" Act is bullshit.
