  • governments take peaceful/quick/easy methods and make them less successful
  • CTB takes a lot of planning and courage (there are way more attempts or near attempts than successful CTBs)
  • most people just don't want to kill themselves beyond maybe a fleeting thought. SI that exists way before an attempt even begins.
those are the reasons I think successful CTB rates are low.

One reason could be that in some European countries it´s very easy to get the required equipment (SN, inert gas, gun...etc.)

I think the American Association of Suicidology reports that for every successful attempt, there are 25 failed attempts. I expect many more people in the world are unhappy enough to consider suicide- they may not necessarily end up doing it though.

I don't know really. I maybe only know one person in real life who I think is suicidal. Still- I'm not so sure many people I know are exactly all together happy. They just seem to be trying to make the best of it. I suppose I do wonder what it is they see in life.

Many people simply claim they are happy. They think they are happy because they have a job, a car, always the latest smartphone and brand-name clothes. But in fact, many of these people are not happy, but just stupid, because they do not understand what is happening in this world and what is really important to be happy.

Hmmm, maybe. I wonder if they can dellude themselves their whole life. What is really important to be happy though? I'm guessing many people will say human connection- love maybe. Or- self fulfillment perhaps? Sad thing is- it's so very easy to lose both of those things in this world. So- is the 'purpose' not to have ties at all? To be totally self sufficient? I don't know. I clearly haven't worked it out!

There's a lot of reasons. A few others:

* Camaraderie: people know that everyone else is also struggling to some degree and don't want to let the team down.
* Religion: threats of hell, etc. Especially an issue in less educated societies, which happen to include billions of people.
* Copium: shallow entertainments that are constantly being sold to us
* Self-deception: It is easy to spend years lying to oneself or buying into the idea that there will be a magical change at some point.

Having said all of that, it could be argued that nobody wants to die but it is often seen (accurately or inaccurately) as the only means of eliminating suffering or leaving behind an intolerable situation. Beyond these band-aid solutions or being blocked for end-of-life methods, people might find some genuine solutions from time to time.

I think it wouldn't be so low if methods as peaceful as Nembutal were legalised for people, the problem lies in how suicide is purposely made so difficult and inaccessible with too many risks and complications involved in trying to die so instead people just continue to suffer as if one doesn't find a way to leave they basically have no choice but to stay here until they somehow die anyway. It's so inhumane how suicide isn't accepted as a valid option despite the fact that this dreadful world is filled with endless suffering.

This depends on the individual. Every person has different needs. Every person sees the world with different eyes.

Most people don't have the courage that you need to commit something like that. You gotta have a bunch of courage and most humans are indeed cowards that use others for their advantage

It isn't so low among people with Autism.

People with autism die anywhere from 16 to 40 years earlier on average depending on how low-functioning they are.
One huge factor in this is suicidality.
Mother nature built us to suffer and die.

Article:
  • [Suicide] is the second leading cause of death for autistic people. Average life expectancy for autistic people is just 54 years old. (Swedish study of over 27,000 cases)
  • Up to 66% of autistic adults have considered suicide
  • Autistic children are 28 X more likely to think about or try suicide
  • One study showed that 15% of autistic children had suicidal thoughts compared to 0.5% of typically developing children
  • Population-wide studies in the US, Sweden and Taiwan show that autistic people are up to seven times more likely to die by suicide and six times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population
  • It is also greater among autistic women, who are 13 times more likely than non-autistic women to die by suicide

Article:
  • Except for infections, autistic people were more likely to have died from any of the causes of death considered, especially suicide and epilepsy
  • The Swedish study found that autistic people were 7.55 times more likely to die by suicide, with "higher functioning" individuals at a greater risk than "lower functioning," with women usually more at risk than men. This is in contrast to the general population, where usually suicide rates are 3.5 times higher in men than women
  • Additionally, the Utah study found females to be more than three times more likely to die from suicide than their non-autistic female counterparts, young people with ASD were at over twice the risk for suicide than their non-autistic peers, and that autistic individuals in general were less likely than others to die from firearm-related suicides

The disproportionate percentage of autistic people making up this forum's member base certainly bears that out.

Wishing and ultimately acting to escape this world is not limited to people who are considered by a coroner to having committed suicide according to their very limited set of criteria.

If you include death by drug overdose, then numbers are rising fast, at least in the US. Sure, not all overdoses are suicide attempts but it does speak about the crippling pain that people are going through and their unhappiness.
