American Sign Language and English. I'm from the US.

ASL is really interesting. It has a different structure.

Fom what I understand, people who communicate in ASL can somewhat communicate with sign language communicators from a different language. Kind of like how Spanish and Portuguese speakers can understand each other. Do I have that right?

English, obviously.
I also started learning German on Duolingo but when I started to get a bit more advanced I realised that Duolingo is a bit rubbish as it doesn't explain general concepts. It just throws similar phrases or sentences at you repeatedly in the hope that stuff sticks and you figure things out yourself.

For instance, "Das Madchen", "Die Frau" and "Der Mann" is repeated constantly.
But the principles behind der, die and das are not adequately explained and so rather than applying a rule, you have to remember whether it's der, die or das for every single thing!
I was learning Spanish and French over Duolingo and I agree that it is not a very good app.

Almost forgot about english, lost in translation(s) !

I love some Norwegian metal song names. I can even remember a few very cool ones without checking the spelling.
Og Jeg Laktok Odstrikets Inntog
Raabjorn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde
Hunnerkongens Sorgsvarte Ferd Over Steppene

I have no idea what those mean, but they sound very brutal when pronounced with Russian accent. Does anyone here is passionate for pronouncing certain words or their combinations? Regularly doing this improves my mood, but first I make sure that no one hears me.

I'm English, so naturally, I speak English... But I can also speak Welsh with a reasonably fluent Southern dialect, although I can certainly also get by with the Northern dialect with the odd mistake here and there.

From Russia. Yeah, we have to learn foreign language in school (and in any other educational institution), usually English. Some schools/institutes can provide two lessons of different languages at the same time as it was in my school, - English and French, the second one came few years late, so it was a hell to learn it after/with English. Even after all of that my English still sucks :D

I'm curious. I've always heard that people in Europe are required to learn a foreign language in elementary school. I want to know if this is true. I find it really weird that people in the US aren't required to learn a foreign language until high school.

I know American Sign Language and English. I'm from the US.

Like the average American from the states I find struggling through English to be a full time job. Last I read a couple of decades ago, English has over a million words in the dictionary. This was before the internet and before Webster added the word "`bigly".

I can order a beer in Spanish and I can ask for the bathroom an hour later. This level of bilingual seems to serve me just fine.

I know American Sign Language and English. I'm from the US.
We are taught a foreign language in Secondary School ( That's age 11-16 ) here in U.K. Its not optional. Its on the syllabus.
In my time it was French. I still know some words and phrases.
(I enjoyed it. I found it interesting and kind of wish I could speak a second language fluently. But I'm not linguistically gifted.)
Spanish replaced French as the taught second language in U.K schools some years ago.

I also , pointlessly , know how to say 'I love you' in Ukrainian but anyway…..

I do think Sign Language should be taught to all kids at some point in their schooling.

Yeah, but I was wondering more about the context because it didn't make any sense to me. I thought that he might use google trans to translate the sentence from one language to another, the result then is translated onto another language, and so on, and so on, and then back to the original language to laugh at the result.

I use Google translate most of the time here, and it definitely takes effort, time, and energy to translate back and forth between English and Arabic language. And the translation results sometimes can be inaccurate and quite funny :))

The main reason is that being from many countries in Europe you end up speaking a language that is common to just a few dozen million people (or less). If you want to travel and/or work abroad and with it being much more common in the last few decades, you really need a second language. So I would say it definitely is true.

I was born in former East Germany, grew up in the UK and now live in Austria.
