What do you think happens when we die?

This question is not meant to evoke the classic notions of heaven or hell. Rather, I invite us to reflect on more elaborate theories about what might occur after death.
Personally I believe that after we die there is absolutely nothing. You die, your heart stops, your brain doesn't function anymore. I'd compare it to times when you fall unconscious, the only difference is that when you fall unconscious you eventually wake up. (^^)
I imagine it will be similar to going under unaesthetic. A maybe heightened awareness of waiting for whatever death feels like and then, nothing.
I once read an article on a very unfortunate patient who died during a brain scan. The areas of the brain associated with memory lit up. So- that would seem to suggest we might indeed see our lives flash before us.
I believe the brain is swamped with natural chemicals- hormones at the end. So, it wouldn't surprise me if it felt like nothing we had ever felt before. I tend to personally believe that that's what NDE's are all about. Not that we actually go anywhere. Maybe more the brain's last flourish, before it dies. Like a very intense dream.
Something tells me that we might life the same life again and again for an eternity but we obviously never remember the previous life, which is a terrifiyng thought honestly
I just believe death to be non-existence where this dreadful, torturous and cruel existence is all gone and forgotten which is all I hope for, all I want is to never suffer again, I'd just never wish for the burden of existence and I suffer simply from being burdened with this existence, all I want is to be permanently unconscious free from the burden of existence I always saw as a mistake in the first place.
Eternal sleep, that's it. I love sleeping because when asleep, you can't really feel anything (plus I rarely have nightmares). So I generally just see death as falling asleep but never having to wake up and not having any dreams either. Just a permanent state of rest.
