So I will have to go with whipping and then crucifiction.
Setting one self on fire comes pretty close though.

Hanging is instantaneous if done correctly.

I agree with the points below that fire or a non-narcotic poison would be painful.

Cyanide is said to be agonising and you remain conscious as your body shuts down.

I worked on a construction site years ago at Proctor and Gamble and had to work very close to fire (it was some sort of process of turning pulp to paper. I forget exactly how it worked. It was many moons ago.) But the instructor claimed being caught on fire didn't hurt as bad as people thought because the fire burned away the nerve endings so fast you wouldn't feel much agony for long.

Having said that, I still wouldn't give it a try.

I would say burning alive, electrocution and liver failure from paracetamol overdose.
Once saw a video of man setting himself on fire and jumping off this famous bridge in Hungary. He didnt even flinch when he was burning, he only fell down after he lost consciousness / died. Wtf :o
