I've attempted partial once and almost succeeded...almost because my parents found me.

After recollecting and reminding myself of that night...I realized why I succeeded on my first attempt. I never even tried it or tested it.

I grabbed my scarf. In my country we use really long scarf. It worked.

Do you think the thickness of the ligature plays the major role here?
If yes, can I use a pet leash or collar next time?

Yes the scarfs would work(people have used them to ctb if it's the indian scarfs you meant), thick ligature means pressure is distributed over larger area and longer time to pass out.
