Using the correct knots

I posted a question about this before, but no one answered.
I'm asking again now, in case someone can help.
I can't decide if the hangman's knot is suitable for FSH. I've rarely seen this knot used on this site; almost everyone uses the Arbor knot.

Hangman's noose is definitely suitable. There's a reason it has this name, and it's been and still is prevalent in lynchings the world over. My guess is other knots are ultimately just easier and just as useful. That said, I'm in no way a knot expert, so I'm curious to see what others have to say.

If this is the right knot, I'd also like to know how many times the rope needs to be wrapped around. The traditional hangman's knot consists of 13 coils, but I suspect that's just a superstition. In practice, does the knot's behavior change at all if I increase or decrease the number of coils?

The hangman's knot is for long-drop hanging. It is made to be strong to break the neck but not necessarily constrict.

The traditional hangman's knot has 7-8 coils. You are correct, 13 us based on superstition.

The noose knot constricts under pressure and therefore tightens around the neck. This is the knot you want to use for full suspension or partial hanging.


Also, the noose knot and slipknot are similar but each tighten when pulled on a different end. Only one works for hanging.
