Over the past year, increased regulatory pressure in multiple regions like UK OFCOM and Australia's eSafety has led to higher operational costs, including infrastructure, security, and the need to work with more specialized service providers to keep the site online and stable.

as far as i know, this site is a modified forum template kinda thing. seen very similar ones around. probably wasn't a decision by whoever made SS but just remnants from a system to incentivise high post counts.
what you said crossed out is true. me and @NoPoint2Life are of the same rank and so have the yellow colour for our names when seeing the "Users who are viewing this thread" at the bottom of the page as well as in conversations, original poster name for the thread, profile replies, etc.
that bug happens if you disable showing your online status. if you turn it on, you should see your name be your chosen colour. However it doesn't really matter as people won't see your name on the front page if you disable your online status.
