Recently I came back overseas from work. While I was there, someone in my team instructed me on how to smoke. So I tried to smoke a cigarette for the first time there, but when I did, it did not feel that good. I think I coughed a lot, and my chest felt weird afterwards in a bad way. I do not know if that was because I smoked incorrectly, or maybe other health conditions I have. However, I have always heard that smoking can really help with stress. Do you think I should try again to smoke a cigarette? Will it get easier? Maybe the more I try to smoke, eventually I will get used to it.

I'm not very knowledgeable on this kind of thing, so it would help if someone else gave me their experience and thoughts on smoking cigarettes and how they have affected you or someone you know over the years. Maybe starting to smoke can change things about me and my thoughts for the better?

theyre okay once in a while, don't get addicted because then you won't get that buzz anymore. You just keep smoking and smoking till eventually you get used to it. I can never get used to weed though.

same, I always freak out about nonsense like how the universe is infinite or feeling like I live in a simulation and my awareness of the fact is going to cause the creators to unplug the simulation and instantly kill me, and then I'll try to comprehend the afterlife somehow or lack thereof.

It usually only happens when I take too high of a dosage too fast though.

Bro wtf is this like we are not talking about exercising here or meditation or some shit
Why would you want to force yourself to get addicted or be dependent on something like this to use as a crutch
Regardless I am sure there are better ways to deal with stress I wish you the best

Absolutely not worth it. You are going to end up smelling disgusting, constantly coughing, and lose a LOT of money. Not to mention feeling like shit all the time unless you are smoking. Addictions never make your life better. They do not take away your problems, just add to them.

Nicotine is an alkaloid and a VERY, VERY addictive alkaloid. In fact, one cigarette can have a person addicted.

I am 70, and I mention this only because so many in my high school class way back when started smoking and they are ALL dead from stage 4 lung cancer.

Yes, anyone can get cancer, in fact I had gall bladder cancer BUT to pay thousands per year to die from it!??!!

Remember one guy who always told me that: "smoking was not going to hurt him". He was right, smoking did not hurt him, IT KILLED HIM!!! He got stage 4 lung cancer in both lungs and then the cancer attacked his heart, that did him in, HOWEVER he also had to be tied down in his bed as he trashed around could not get enough oxygen and was really doped up on pain killers.

Gee, smoking and then dying like that, NO THANK YOU!

Also, the added bonus of a person's clothes, car, housing, everything smelling like a stale forest fire, lovely!!!!

I never ever went out with a lady that smoked, as that was like kissing an ash tray, again, NO THANK YOU!

I smoke about a pack a day. It is one of my only pleasures. Every night I get in my car and drive to nowhere in particular with some sad/angry music playing, a pack of cigarettes and some coffee. It's a nightly ritual that brings me a marginal amount of comfort. Are cigarettes good for me? Absolutely not. Are they helping me at all? Again no. Do I like the feel and aesthetic of them while driving with the window down in the middle of nowhere thinking about all the times and places my life went wrong? Absolutely.

They'll be the death of me eventually if nothing else gets me first but that's fine. I'll take heart failure or cancer. Might be what I deserve.

Sorry I did not mean to offend. I do think addiction is bad, but I thought the pros would outweigh the cons overall. I am just having a hard time finding other ways to deal with stress that are not negative on the body. I'm sorry I'm not sure what else to do.

Do you know how long it will take to see negative effects of smoking? I thought I would die soon so I would not be able to feel or see any of these bad things, but if it comes soon after starting, then I do not want to deal with that. My health is already very bad physically.
Money is very very hard right now too. Thank you for bringing that up. When I got packs in Japan, it costed about 540 yen, about $4, so I thought it would be not too expensive. But here where I stay now, I find they are $11.

Ok, I think I will put off this idea then. Sorry for the trouble but thank you everyone for the replies.

Talk about cost of cigarettes, the state that I live in here in the U.S., a pack runs $9.50 (USD), so a carton of 10 runs $95.00 and I can think of better ways of using that money than buying cigarettes and watching my hard-earned money go up in smoke.

With the benefit of either COPD or stage 4 lung cancer if I did smoke.

Had one cigarette in the summer of 1977, the next morning I woke up with a sore throat, a stuffed-up nose and my shirt stunk like a stale fire, YUCK!!!!

Ahaha I don't smoke but I find the idea of a man smoking very attractive, besides that I know it's a hard vice to quit and leads to cancer, suppresses appetite, messes up your voice making it scratchier

NOT EVER being mean, snotty, anything, just food for thought on this aspect, and yes at the age of 70, I HAVE seen the consequences of smoking long term.

If a person would marry a smoker, then money might be tighter, going up in smoke, and LONG-TERM having to be either in a hospital or hospice watching a loved one dying from stage 4 lung cancer.

I have seen folks in their very last stage of life before dying from smoking, there in again either and both in a hospital and a hospice setting, and it is NOT PRETTY. The loved ones crying at the bed side waiting for the last gasp of air.

Back in the 1970's, I saw so many both guys and gals who went with smokers, some thought it looked "cool" and one sticks out in my mind, as being tethered to a hospice bed from thrashing around gasping for air right before dying, and I saw it.

It was HELL ON EARTH! The poor guy's wife was besides herself, so damn sad and he did it to himself, so sad and preventable.

Yes, anyone can get cancer, I had gall bladder out of the blue, BUT why egg it on and ALSO pay so much money to die from it?

Just food for thought is all.

I care and love everyone and want the best LONG TERM for everyone is all.

Walter

cigarettes are the only thing bringing me a little bit of comfort, I smoke about 3 a day.
on some days I smoke way more as I really need them, I really need them bad on some days for example today I smoked 4 and I'm gonna smoke a few more, today I will smoke about 10 cigarettes id say.
smoking more then 3 is not something I regularly do tho, only on the worst days
I really love smoking

Tried them a couple of times, honestly didn't get the appeal. Also tried vaping once at a party a while back and I ended up vaping so much I had to puke for literal hours, so never again

I enjoy the occasional cigarette. I smoke about 1-3 per month - I had one in July but am already up to 2 in August.
I use them pretty strictly in response to extreme anxious/depressed episodes; cases where I can't be despondent and/or crying at work. They help me calm down, focus, regulate my emotions and get back to work. There's nothing else as effective for me but I keep my use of them as limited as I can. Using them prescriptively helps me to avoid becoming addicted - I make sure that I'm aware of my reason for having one. Like other chemical dependencies, vulnerability to addiction becomes a bigger threat if you are smoking habitually, for no real reason, to pass time, because you're on break, because it would be kind of nice, etc. That's not to say you can't become addicted while abiding by a reason but it's helped me.
It is not expensive for me - I buy one $20 pack every 6 months or so - but smoking daily gets expensive fast.
Overall, I can't recommend starting to smoke to anyone - it is an objectively bad choice. There are likely ways to get the stress-relieving benefits of nicotine that aren't nearly as detrimental to one's health.

I only smoked cigarettes for a little while, close to a year and a half. I felt a nice buzz from them when I first started and that was kinda nice, but eventually when I became addicted to them, I had to smoke more and more to get the same effect until eventually I didn't get a buzz from them anymore at all. Once the nicotine quit doing anything for me, I only used them as a self harm method to burn up my lungs.

I did eventually quit though, and I don't recommend trying them out because 1. They are too expensive, and 2. as whywere put it, it's only going to cause you severe health problems in the long run, which will only increase your suffering, so best to quit while you're ahead I say. I do like the smell of cigarette smoke still, since I first started smoking them, but I haven't smoked one in a very long time, since March of 2025, so it's been about a year and a half since I last smoked. Kinda funny how the amount of time I smoked them is how long it's been since I quit haha.

If you do intend to smoke them, I would say only do it if you're planning on checking out of life in the very near future, that way you can enjoy them while they still give you a buzz, and then you can die by whatever method you want, but if you intend on living longer than that, then definitely don't smoke.

i like smoking i am on and off i think i will quit for a bit since i'm broke and drgaf. idm not smoking but i can't imagine stopping forever. i just like having 5-15 minutes to do nothing but exist and smoke alone. i get curious about overseas brands too. tbh tho lately its kinda sucked cause i just smoked for no reason. i think cigarettes are best left for the moment of solitude here and there instead of everyday.

i used to vape and i guess bc vapes are banned u get the sus fake igets in aus and that fucked me up in a month whered id have episodes of not being able to breathe properly, so i just smoke. if i get lung cancer i will just ctb and dont want to be here anyways.

hoenstly if you already have health issues, didn't enjoy it, and was coughing then i'd probably not bother as its not worth your while.

I have heard way too many stories of ppl, both known and unknown to me, dying to smoking related illnesses, and those illnesses can be horrible.

If I was to even describe any benefit of smoking and not mention the suffering I have seen it cause, it'd be as if I personally programmed a nasty disease for a random person at a random time.
