    Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

The way the world is working right now with it's inherent hypocrisy,narcissism,greed and the need to control the lives of people, I fear the day might not be too far when they make this place and the people here, scapegoat for their problems. It's a fucked up reality we live in.

I guess you're right too. But sometimes i feel like many parents don't even try to help their kids but when commit suicide, the parents want to blame everyone else. I might be wrong and maybe biased because of my personal experience. And obviously not everyone is like that. But i've seen many cases of the same. Where the kid's future could have been completely different is only their parents listened to them
@Fireheart If my family just listened when my depression started at 21 and took seriously my concerns about the future I wouldn't be spending my 20s planning my death when I reach my 30s.

My family just dismissed everything I felt and even made me feel bad for opening up. Honestly I sometimes feel like screaming at my mother " what do you know about me you're always working or dealing relatives and their bullsh*'t"

The worst thing about growing up with a single mother is being constantly lectured about how "hard" your mother works and the expectations your mother has you because you're the first born and there is no father to provide.

Everyone I reached out to just let me down when I needed them the most. I pretend I am happy and everyone actually believes my lies. Suicide at 30 is now my future. If I could shown someone like me can have a future and wonderful life then I wouldn't want to kill myself. Nobody cared enough to listen

@Born to do it

I f*cking hate the world and human race is not worth saving anymore. I no longer feel guilty for having feelings. When I was 12 years old I watched the movie 2012 and I was absolutely terrified of the world ending in the movie and was happy the ordinary family survived in the end. My younger self would be heartbroken to see the woman I grew up to be and probably stop myself from becoming this person.

The bullsh*t from humanity made me lose faith in the human race. I don't care what anyone says the human race is destructive species that needs to die such a shame covid19 didn't wipe out the world.
The way society and the the internet is set up is that anything related to death or suicide is so highly monitored, taboo and restricted. So when suicidal people actually find a good, safe space to talk, people who aren't suicidal and don't understand what it's like will think it's horrible, unethical and think it shouldn't exist. Then instead of seeking to understand and help the people, all they know how to do is spam the suicide hotline, a hotline that has a reputation of barely helping anyone.
So in conclusion, non suicidal don't actively go out of their way to help suicidal people, and they also look down on and seek to remove suicidal peoples only safe space.
@butterfly3

I am not going to cope if this site gets taken down because I have no where else to go.

-My family do not listen and don't understand at me at all.
- friends stopped talking to me when I mentioned I was suicidal
- Reddit is useless. Men make fun of me for being a virgin in my 20s and everyone else just says the same meaningless platitudes " it's going to be fine" etc
- I got builled and patronised by older women on an online depression support fourms

I pretend to be happy 24/7 because I have given up on reaching out to people

The other issue is that people can cherry-pick comments that suit their agendas, and they end up overlooking/ignoring what's really going on. That's what the NYT did, that's what many people do. Losing a loved one to suicide is tragic. But some grieving parents or relatives may be desperate to find someone or something to blame because they're afraid to look in the mirror or because they have to pour their energy into a cause as a means of surviving the loss of a loved one. I'm sure there are some who are not simply members of the echo chamber, but ignorance has the potential to do great harm, and mob mentality is a specialty of the human race.

Nothing is perfect, but for many, SS is the only safe space where they can be honest and open and (for the most part) not have to worry about being judged, mistreated, misunderstood or attacked. Many come to SS and don't ctb; many are able to put off or avoid ctb because of SS. I've been what many would call a "lurker" and only recently created an account, but SS has helped me for a long time. It's easy for people to miss the fact that this is one of the most supportive communities; you can't find this type of acceptance, understanding and support elsewhere.

Some people would rather feel good about themselves by simply telling someone to call an impersonal, shoddy hotline where you cannot be honest or open without fear of retribution. Some then tell themselves they did a good thing, give themselves a gold star and wander off into the sunset, head held high, blissfully oblivious. Hypocrisy shines bright in this world. People have been pointing fingers and assessing blame without investigating since the dawn of time; that type of behavior is familiar and therefore accepted, no matter how extreme it can be. It is not going anywhere.

Let us hope the same cannot be said about SS.

I met so many wonderful people here on SS

I am on the SS forum I am free to express my true feelings in a way I can not in the real world or other online communities. The real world and online world is just judgmental, unable to embrace plurality of opinion and incapable of showing compassion for peoples suffering.

In 2016 Black Mirror was warning us at how dangerous the mob mentality is as shown in the episode of Hated in the Nation. In the episode the British public use the #DeathTo to express their anger at public figures and celebrities they do not like. In the beginning people think the hashtag is joke and used it to express their hate and anger at a journalist called Jo powers who became the most hated woman over her controversial newspaper article she wrote. The journalist dies a painful death in her home

The hashtag is actually deadly. When a person receives the highest nominations from the hashtag they die being killed by an Artificial intelligence bee which goes inside the person's brain and just swarms inside end. The person will be tormented by this and ends up dying either from fighting to remove the bee which is impossible or other complications.

The public become aware of how deadly hashtag really is and all begin participate even more in nominating people who they believe deserve to die. The end result is society becomes more depraved in enjoying the suffering of the population and actually the social order breaks down. In the end the people who participated in the hashtag die too as well.

Mob mentality is very posionious but still people have not learnt.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond!

I definitely relate and completely agree, and I am very grateful that there's a place where we can express our feelings and thoughts and fears for what they are.. nothing more, nothing less. It's nice to share even just for the sake of sharing, but also to be able to say something you can't otherwise say or to try to relate to others or to commiserate with others or to seek/offer advice or a whole host of other completely genuine and valid reasons.

Outside of SS, there are times when people show great compassion and come together to support one another, but more often than not, people shut down when anything related to this topic comes up. Even the ones who don't mean any harm; it's just reality. And as you said, other online communities and sources are not the same, as they tend to be toxic and cruel, which is the last thing someone who is already suffering needs. You simply cannot discuss or express these things anywhere else, and it's been a major source of comfort to me for a while now. I'm glad you feel comfortable sharing here, too!

As for the Black Mirror episode, that sounds intense! The method of death may not be realistic, but the severity and harshness of that situation are sadly more than fair. Once someone is able to justify something, they are capable of anything, and it's easy to lose one's morality as part of a larger group.

There is a depressing irony in the fact that many people believe they should shut SS down in order to save lives, but the very act of doing so could put so many of those lives in jeopardy.
