Hello, my friends!
I had had depression with suicidal thought for many years. I've had two suicide attempts, I was in the mental institution two times and was diagnosed with the borderline personality disorder. I took medication I was prescribed (antidepressants and antipsychotics) but the side-effects and realization that I can't use them forever made me taper off of them. I was still very suicidal when I decided to try something I had practiced in the past and which seemed to help me, an all levels. So I thought, "I'll give it a try, if this helps - OK, and if it doesn't - I'll stick with the plan to quit". I tried and felt better and the more I practiced the more my thoughts and general well-being changed.
I abandoned the practice due to enormous stress caused by the war in my country, I was devastated. And then I was drafted to join the army, which made me even a bigger mess than I had been. I lost faith in everything and everyone, I hated people and I hated the whole world. I was demobilized due to my mental state and when I got back home my only plan was to live for as long as I had money. I chose several methods to exit and then... I decided (without any hope, really) to give life one more chance.
To cut the long story short, what helped me was connecting to the Source (with my intent) and directing Their energy towards my cleansing and healing. It didn't take long before I noticed positive changes. Working with Reiki daily stabilized me even more, I felt more balanced, more stable. My curiosity returned (I'm a very curious person by nature), I started enjoying thing that I had thought I would never enjoy anymore.
To get attuned to the Source or Reiki (which is commonly used for healing but not only) all you need to do is ask your Higher Self for those attunements. Dedicate a 30-60 minutes period for the process, try to relax and let go all other thought (as much as possible), make sure no one disturbs you during that time. You can do this just before the bedtime. During the attunement you may have some physical sensations and/or change in your emotional state. After the attunement is received you can start the cleansing and healing process. Just dedicate some time for the session, relax and set intention for the process and feel the energy flow (you don't need to imagine the flow, it will occur on its own) or just ask the energy to cleanse and heal you, an all levels: mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, etc. Try to practice daily. I personally prefer to do it just after waking up and/or before bedtime. You can also lay hands on whatever parts of the body bother you and let the energy flow there. With practice you will your own way which works best for you.
There are many other aspects of life these energies can be directed to. It's very simple and it works. Give it a try.

I wasn't aware you could practice reiki yourself I thought you had to go to a practitioner? What is the best way to start out? Is there anything you would suggest for people that want to be introduced and try it for the first time. I'm tempted to include this in my weekly challenge

People can and should practice themselves. The best way to start is to simply begin practicing, to feel and experience. Help of a healer is acceptable of course, but who can guarantee you that the healer is himself/herself healed and clean enough to be able to truly help others? It's like with so many psychologists and psychiatrists, who "help" others while they themselves seem to need help. I'm not saying that there aren't any well-meaning and capable specialists, but it looks like they are few. What life has taught me is that I need to be able to do as much as I can myself and ask for help of others only when there is no other way out.
Also, from the very beginning of my journey on the Reiki path I strongly disliked the idea that you "have" to pay absurd amount of money to get the attunement, it felt so wrong. Especially in times like these, when so many people desperately need help. And especially for those who simply cannot afford to pay that money. Luckily it's so simple - ask your Higher Self!
If you want to explore this in detail, though, I could probably recommend books by Frank Arjava Petter and https://reikirays.com/ The last provides some tips and ideas (for free).

P.S. That's why I prefer to share information instead of offering direct help by means of Reiki. I realize that there is still so much work I need to do on myself and I do not want to unintentionally transfer my disruptive energy and burdens onto others.
We do have a reiki healer in my town. I have just messaged her as I walk her dog. I'm going to try this.
Sure, give it a try, if this person has good credentials. And try it yourself, it's free and it's there for everyone.

An update on a technique... it's very basic but works like charm: work on each of the 7 main chakras starting with the crown chakra and moving all the way down to the root chakra. After that I also give Reiki to legs to ground myself. You can do all that by either placing hands on the each spot or just by using your intention while laying in bed (legs and hands slightly stretched to the sides, palms facing upwards). Give Reiki for 5-10 minutes for each spot or until you feel like it's enough.
