I would say if you get the opportunity and you feel willing to try it then you should try therapy. Recovery is always worth trying first! I would try to be honest with what you are experiencing because it is their job to listen and offer advice. I can't say I've had much experience but if they deem the suicidal thoughts bad enough they might offer medication that helps with that.

I've met decent therapists and horrible ones. It's worth a try but sometimes you have to be reserved to ensure they won't commit you to the psych ward. I recently started therapy but was very clear that I did not want to be punished for asking for help. In my area they can only commit me if I say I will definitely attempt to hurt or kill somebody or myself. Where I used to live they would commit you if you had a plan so it's best to say you don't have a plan until you have some trust built up.
