  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

I find these stats from the Samaritans, the UK suicide help & prevention site, I have read quite a few autopsy reports where they list quite a lot of OD as accidental so won't make the list.

When I read the media they say every 90 minutes someone in the UK, CTB.

If you scroll to the bottom you will see the message they always put at the bottom of the page after someone mentions CTB or they have CTB.

Samaritans say 5219 suicides were registered in 2021
The Sun says every 90 minutes, I calculated, 525960 minutes per year divided by 90 equals 5844.

So who's lying, :smiling:

I am a firm believer they know when someone has or attempted to CTB but play down these figures otherwise they could become known as the suicide capital of the world and who wants that title.

Anyway, I was just being a clever clogs, :smiling:

Ps, Where are you @Busdriver I miss our chats.

Cheers

Geo

Reckon it's only going to get worse too- with the cost of living crisis. Honestly, I can't wait to add myself to that statistic...

Still- reckon we're likely a long way behind some countries. Think Lesotho (in Africa) has one of the highest rates. Plus- it's mainly females who CTB there also- which isn't typical for a lot of countries.

Still you're right- reckon most countries- and most especially 'developed' countries probably feel pretty embarassed when their citizens start offing themselves en masse.

I envy those people so much, they are so fortunate to have found a way to free themselves from this cruel existence. But it's sad how suicide is still so stigmatised in the UK with no assisted dying options, so people have to struggle in finding ways to leave themselves. But suicide hotlines really are useless despite the fact that they are everywhere, a hotline could never take away why people want to ctb in the first place. Suicide should be viewed as being a rational solution and a personal choice rather than something that must always be prevented in every single case.

Feels low that, I bet many go recorded as misadventure or accident.

Hard to call it a suicide unless its very clear, such there being a note etc. I bet the real numbers are 10x higher.

The UK is a brutal place to live, inflation at 10%, rents and mortgages going up by over 25% this year, energy costs more than doubling and education and healthcare cuts never before seen in history.. all along with whats expected to be a massive loss of jobs and unemployment.

I will be surprised if we are not having a suicide every 90 seconds by the end of the year, let alone every 90 minutes.

What do hotlines actually say to you when you call? I can't imagine them ever talking down someone who had planned to ctb ahead of time. I imagine they are pretty good at stopping people just acting on impulse/emotion though.

A lot of suicides in the UK get written off as a "narrative" verdict. Usually in cases where no note has been left. It was David Cameron's government who urged coroners to do this, due to expected increases in the suicide rate as a consequence of austerity.

With the amount of pressure being placed upon the populace at the moment - austerity 2.0, lockdowns, plagues, price hikes, I would certainly believe that the rate is at an all-time high, with many if not most being recorded as narrative verdicts to keep the official figures artificially low.
