A very common tool used to determine root cause consists of asking 5 why's and documenting the response of each why. The purpose of this is to delve past the immediate cause and get to the actual root of what the problem is. A fact that we are faced with is that people associated with this site have committed suicide. That is a fact that elicits many emotions including grief, anger, despair, and frustration.
It is very difficult in an outcome based model where the result is irreversible to not fault the immediate cause. Yet every day in crimes, car wrecks, explosions and other activities engineers and forensic specialists trace throught he five why's and the results are often surprising.
A hypothetical could be the following:
Fact:
SSmember007 died by suicide using method xyz
A tempting thought would be to state "he died because he posted on sanctioned suicide!". But this is equivalent to saying that the radio station making someone laugh is responsible for a driver who loses focus running into a bus full of vulnerable orphans and killing one of them. We can say that the why was "if he had not laughed the orphan would still be here". But is that really the case.
Let's think about SSMember007:
Why did SSMember007 die:
Why 1) 007 died because he/she used method xyz to end their life
The next question should not be "who taught them but simply "why"
Why 2: Why did SS member use method xyz?-because they read about it on SS
A decent answer. But we can't stop there if we want a root cause
Why 3: why did SS member read about method xyz on SS? Here you can't diverge into hyperbole by saying "He/she was completely of sound mind and body and their otherwise happy day tricked them into reading about suicide methods which if they had not been here SS007 would have been perfectly fine. We have to answer the why
SSMember007 was reading about method XYZ on SS because they had suicidal ideation.
Why4 "why did 007 have suicidal ideation
Because 007 was deeply depressed with untreatable depression
Why5 why did 007 have untreatable depression
Here we have a likely root cause. If we focused on that untreatable depression or untreatable pain, the balance of rising suicides would begin to fall in the world for many
I urge anyone on here to do their own 5why as to their reason for being here.
Mine comes down to chronic severe treatment resistant depression. I am not here simply because this site exists, because I was recruited, because I fell prey to a set of pedophile incels.
