You'd never believe how much I wanted a pet in the house growing up. My mum has kindly said, yes, we can get a cat and I was so happy, but of course this thing is always at the back of my mind.

I love the furry little beautiful creatures, but it would be selfish to upend a cat's life for my own comfort to abandon it in what - three months maybe? I've actually had the option since last November and I imagine if I'd chosen to get a cat how different would my life be?

What love and excitment would a lovely little creature bring to my life? That's been two months. I'm worried that this is another situation the "Can't make a decision/commitment until everything is perfect" mentality is holding me back. Maybe the cat would've given me purpose and energy. Who knows?

I believe animals can give a purpose to life. I believe mine would if the context wasn't different. I got it with my now ex for her birthday, she left me a month later and it's living with me because we're both living with parents and her parents said no to animals, especially cats since her dad is allergic.

Anyways, if you're 100% sure you're going to CTB, no matter what, I wouldn't get a pet. If you aren't 100% sure and you believe an animal could change your mind, I say go for it. Maybe it'll make you happy enough to change your mind completely.

Good thing about cats is that they're generally low maintenance and independent, at least more so than dogs. Only things you need to do with a cat daily is; change the litter once a day, feed and water, and they'll normally come to you if they want to be pet. Depending on the cat, it could be very needy and want attention all the time, it could be very independent and not want much attention. Just know a new cat generally will be very needy for attention as it's getting acclimated to its new home.

I'm dealing with the opposite problem right now and trust me, if you're still thinking about ending things, it's smarter and more compassionate to abstain from getting any sort of pet.
They do not eliminate anyone's reason for wanting to die, unless a person seriously has no other reason besides the unmet desire to have a companion creature in their home.
The more you care about the new family member, the more you will feel like a hostage if your time for catching the bus should still come.
And it won't be fair to the animal to be rehomed (or abandoned), nor fair on yourself to say goodbye and become stressed out with finding an appropriate new home.
(In my case I have another party involved, who sabotaged my near-perfect plan for most of the animals being cared for here.
But I can still attest to how difficult it is in general, to both be attentive while they're here and/or let go when need be.)

Maybe you could help out a cat in another way for now, a way in which you won't have to shoulder the ultimate responsibility.

Idk what your living situation is, if you wouldn't be the primary caretaker to begin with, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad decision, but if responsibility and ownership is going to fall on you, I would advise against it in your current state.

If you are certain about ctb, please do not get a cat. My cat is the reason I'm still here and it's so hard. I want to leave more and more everyday, but I won't until she's gone. The immense love I have for her is why I stick around but is not even close to making me not want to ctb.

Despite my love for animals, my end-of-life plans is one of the main reasons why I refuse to keep a companion animal. One of the best alternatives for animal companionship is volunteering as an animal caregiver like at an animal shelter or wildlife rehabilitation center. One of the advantages is that stepping down from that position (for whatever reason) usually won't result in the same negatives consequences as caring for animal 24/7 throughout their lifespan. Perhaps there is an animal shelter or other cat-related charity you can support through volunteering or donations until you're ready to take your leave.

I have two cats and let me tell you they bring you love like no other. They are my everything and WERE the reason for my living but there is a darker side of having a pet such as evil vets and insurance companies that WILL break your heart. I don't know if I can handle the heart break of seeing my children die.

One on end they give you a purpose for living but they only live for a short amount of time and you will feel helpless when they get sick and the vets don't care as it's all about money.

I would say if you know that your family is kind and will take care of the cat after you're gone, then go for it, the cat can actually help them heal from your loss but if they aren't good people then don't.

Here's my post about it.
