So I tested my nitrogen and hood today. My tank was full. My bag was made betty style. My hood was taking too long to fill up so I had to flatten down my hair better and put on a headband. Then I started again and it fully inflated no leaks. I was surprised that the hood does take some time to fully inflate. I don't know why I thought it would immediately fill up quick. I then pulled the bag with nitrogen flowing down over my head but I didn't take a breath like I had wants to. I wanted to take a breath so I'd know what it felt like smelled like tasted like ect. (Which I know is nothing) but I wanted to experience it before my actual CTB day. I'm wondering is it supposed to take a minute or so for the bag to fully inflate? Would turning the pressure up make it inflate faster? But then that would use up the gas quicker so I hope it's good enough.

How were you able to obtain a nitrogen tank and do you mind showing us a pic of your setup?

My flow rate is set at 30 because I have one of the regulators that just click in the number. It just has one guage. Greenberg who is very knowledgeable on this method told me 30 is the setting I needed.

I live in the US anyone can get Nitrogen from any place that sells inert gas.

30 litres per minute? That's double what's usually recommended so in theory the bag should have inflated very quickly unless you're using a huge bag?

Please refer to my Jan 26th blog entry as to how the 15LPM threshold was established. Cheers.

With my type of regulator my setting is 30 but with the two guage regulators it's 15

@Greenberg should the bag take a minute or two to inflate?

If it's 15 litre per minute that would mean a 15 litre bag would take a minute to inflate give a take a bit for any leakage.

I don't know how big your bag is but if it's taking 2 minutes and your bag isn't 30 litres big somethings wrong somewhere.

@Butterfly65: From memory, you have an N2 regulator which measures in CFH as a result a conversion had to be made with respect to your flow rate. I remember doing the calculation for you and 15LPM translates to around 30CFH on your regulator.

For your bag, the fill time will depend on the size of your bag. If it takes 2 minutes to fill, it means that your big is around 30L.

@Greenberg Yeah it took about a minute or so to fill at 30 setting flow rate on my CHF regulator. I have a standard size oven roasting bag. Should the flow be set a bit higher?

Sure, you can set the regulator at a higher flow rate to fully inflate the bag. Just be mindful that you are using gas at a faster rate.

I live in Sweden and here it is only possible to by nitrogen 50 liter (the biggest gastub from Linde) and 1 900 liter (the smallest from Air Liquide) - one is too small and the other is too big. 220 liter nitrogen should be enough for a peaceful death.

@NormaJeane, I am confused by your volume figures. Are you referring to the water displacement of the cylinder or the volume of uncompressed nitrogen? Cheers.

But it would still work fine to get the job done even set at 30? Just be a bit slower?

Absolutely! For your specific regulator, the flow rate setting should be set at 30cfh. Cheers.

I have a sar mask setup so it's easy to dry run the flow and breathing nitrogen. I got pretty queasy after 5 shallow breaths and estimate another 10 to pass out. Maybe half the time if breathing deeply. It has no taste btw.

You felt nauseous? Could that have been from anxiety?

There should not be any nausea/vomiting, maybe euphoria. Depending on the person, there may be some lightheadedness just prior to the onset of unconsciousness. I doubt anxiety would cause nausea. Are you confident of the purity of your gas? Was there a particular smell to it? Cheers.

No. It's from asphyxiation. It's like being so hungry you're about to faint feeling. But in this case it's fast and intense. I imagine it would like being knocked out from an upper cut. Of course taking shallower breaths is an option.

Again, no nausea; symptoms of hypoxia are described below:

What is Hypoxia?

"Hypoxia is defined as a condition where body tissues are not adequately oxygenated. This condition is mostly due to an insufficient concentration of oxygen in the blood.

This will ultimately result in an impairment of the metabolic activities taking place in the body, giving rise to several compensatory signs and symptoms as follows.
  • An increase in the heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output.
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing
  • Sweating
  • Cyanosis or bluish discoloration of mucosal membranes due to poor peripheral blood supply.
  • Other changes of the skin color, ranging from blue to cherry red depending on the etiology."

@Greenberg Would one already be unconscious before these symptoms arrived? I have extreme anxiety and can't handle increased heart rate, I have asthma and don't want to be wheezing or feeling short of breath. I hope I can be unconscious already before these symptoms set in.

Yes heart rate definitely increased. And not due to anxiety

Then you would need a smaller enclosure than a bag to hasten unconsciousness. @Butterfly65, the Exit Bag method is generally not recommended for people with respiratory issues (like COPD, asthma, etc.). Are you able to control your asthma prior to using the gas?

@Greenberg yes my asthma is well controlled. I'm more worried now about the increased heart rate at this point, ( I have extreme anxiety) how likely would I be to experience this symptom before unconsciousess?

Any chance you can take some antidepressants (like a benzodiazepine drug) prior? Remember that unconsciousness is very swift and without notice.

@Greenberg yes I have xanax. Is it for sure that I'd feel any of the symptoms of hypoxia before unconsciousess? This is the scariest thing for me.

It really depends on the person. The faster your enclosure reaches 100% gas saturation, the faster toward unconsciousness.
