If your goal is to die, then it's very ineffective. If your goal is to get help, then there are a lot of ways to do that without hurting yourself.
you don't even need medical treatment to be hospitalized, if you're only doing it to be in the hospital. you can go to the clinic or call the hospital and ask to be voluntarily hospitalized. you receive the same treatment but you don't get put on suicide watch. i asked to be hospitalized in high school and it was pretty chill.
