I hadn't seen this reply at the time. I wish I had. I would have told you to quit, just do nothing for a month or two, then apply to other things.

he would be in the same situation he is now, job market is trash today in a lot of countries, doing nothing for a month or two is not wise and there is no guarantee he would be able to find anything soon
