Cid from Final Fantasy 4; he jumped off an airship with a bomb in his hand and destroyed a whole fleet of enemy airships in the explosion, simultaneously sealing the portal to the underworld with rubble and saving his friends-- all with a smile on his face and cracking jokes the whole time. What a badass!

Oh, but then you find out later he somehow survived, and it ruined the whole moment. Though I guess the fact that he survived makes him even more of a badass?

There is a movie titled 'night, Mother about a woman who is getting ready to commit suicide. She has her mother come over that evening while she's getting her affairs in order. The entire time she is explaining why she is about to do it and her mother trying to talk her out of it. The mother was understandably frantic but what stuck with me was how calm and rational she remained, considering she was about to die.

Harold & Maude probably formed my opinion of suicide as as a whole. Thought she was a double badass for making it clear she was dying on her own terms. (Though I'd rather not do it in my 80s...)

Jonghyun, a kpop idol who used carbon monoxide to ctb. I do like kpop, but his death sticks with me for other reasons: one, his cause of death was released fairly quickly after he died, and they specifically said that he used a coal briquettes on the stove. It shocked me to read such a detailed cause od death, especially a suicide, on a mainstream news site.

The other reason I always think about him is because his suicide note was published. I'll leave a link to where you can read the full thing, if you want. The entire thing strikes a chord with me because it's so raw and I get it, but the end hits the hardest imo.

Even though you can't laugh right now, just don't send me off blaming me.

I don't know. I cant really explain it, but his death haunts me in a way that others don't.

[Science Is Scary]

I've heard many times that science fiction is social commentary. "Death Wish" (Season 2, Episode 18) of Stark Trek: Voyager is a very obvious example.

The story centers around a physically healthy and immortal person who wishes to die. To prevent his suicide, other immortal people have imprisoned him. Through some circumstances, he is freed and given the chance to debate why his suicide should be allowed.

The story stays somewhat neutral on the suicide debate, until perhaps the ending. You may recognize some of the simplistic arguments used. Maybe you have even made some of the arguments yourself. The writers did their homework.

In one instance, the person argues that not being able to die cheapens his and everyone else's existence. Outside of the story, opponents of suicide can claim an opposite argument. They can claim that one person's death cheapens everyone else's existence. I have no idea how to reconcile these arguments.

I find this story interesting because the person wanting suicide is not dealing with physical pain or a deadly disease. The writers could have written a safe story about either of those justifications. Instead, the writers picked justifications that were harder to defend, such as boredom. And boredom seems like a rather taboo justification for suicide.

Overall, I think "Death Wish" is a decent presentation of a debate on suicide for a casual audience.
