Do you believe in such a thing? Recently I was chatting with someone, who claimed they would know if some one was suicidal as apparently they would show *signs*
Intrigued by this mindset, I hit good old google, and yes, there are websites stating symptoms that show if someone has suicidal intention.

It's made me very aware of how I am, and now I am actively trying to do the opposite, but its hard when you feel like you are just wading through mud every day.

But it makes me wonder, is there any truth in these signs, or is it coincidental?

Things I read include:

  • social withdrawal
  • a persistent drop in mood
  • disinterest in maintaining personal hygiene or appearance
  • uncharacteristically reckless behaviour
  • poor diet changes, rapid weight changes
  • being distracted
  • anger
  • insomnia
  • alcohol or drug abuse
  • giving away sentimental or expensive possessions
  • hopelessness
  • failing to see a future
  • believing they are a burden to others
  • saying they feel worthless or alone
  • talking about their death or wanting to die.
Just interested in others thoughts on this?

it is but because most suicidal people know that there are signs they work to hide it. so youre friend isnt lying but i think they are holding themselves up higher then they should be. its not as easy as they seem to think

i personally relate to some of these, but i feel like the signs depend on why you want to die. it's not always that your life is fucked up.

maybe it's because you feel that existence is meaningless, and therefore you have no reason to live if your existence is meaningless. maybe it's because you realize that you deserve better than what this life gives you, and want to die as an act of self-love. these are only scraping the surface, though.

i don't know where i'm going with this, nor do i have the right words right now, but i guess what i'm trying to say is that the "signs" manifest differently for different reasons.

I too can related to all of them. I have gone to numerous psychiatrists and most have said stuff along the same lines. I have 2 suicide attempts so far and some things on your list yes they fit me some not. I truly believe each of us on this earth are totally unique and a guide is just that, take it with a grain of salt. That aspect is what makes sanctioned suicide and ALL the global family mmebers so important, we ALL share and help each other. Love and peace to all the global family members here!

These are the type of signs which only work retrospectively. Once someone does it, everyone will claim that they showed signs, but the signs themselves are prospectively a very poor predictor.

I lol'd.

On topic though, I'd agree with most of these. Though not everyone displays the same way as we are all different. Some try to hide it and play it down and others don't. I do relate to a lot of these though.

I can relate to about half of them.
But it's so random being as many show absolutely no signs at all but ctb
Some probably relate to all but never ctb

Yes very good indicators but as said before, people who want to CTB try to hide all those things.
Nobody knows I'm thinking that way and I have everything in place to CTB. I would expect people to be shocked I guess. But when they realise the shit I was dealing with, they might understand in the end.

I can relate to most of the list. But, I think that family members and friends who regularly interact with the suicidal person can become desensitized to these signs over time and may no longer see them as genuine warning signs. They just figure that's how the person is

I understand but these symptoms also could relate to other problems with mental health, hormonal changes, stresses in life.

How common to hear of a loved one who have taken their life and people say they should have known, or had no idea, they seemed happy.

I think with suicidal thoughts the dark times take over with the torment but those who are near the end are able to hide their pain more easily?
More content with their last days/ hours they've got?

Just thinking out load.

Be great if people were that aware ‍♀️ more sort to try work through their problems and not feel alone.

I think it depends on how long the person has been suicidal yet functioned in their society. If its been a long time people can adjust and mask it completely, by going through the motions while keeping ones inner intentions to themself. Thats the classic...he seemed absolutely fine narrative that you sometimes hear when someone ctb.

  • uncharacteristically reckless behaviour
  • giving away sentimental or expensive possessions
  • believing they are a burden to others
  • talking about their death or wanting to die.

These are probably the most obvious for a layperson.

The first one can also be a sign of PTSD, especially for a vet just returning from combat duty.

Hmm, reading those points got me thinking that there might be a disparity between men and women for these signs. How many men would openly talk about mental health (like feeling suicidal or that they're a burden)? Or see sentimentalitly in possessions?

Obviously you can't just assume because of gender one will act in a certain way, but I do think that there is something behind the fact that men are more likely to commit suicide than women. And perhaps a large part of that is down to signs being easier to spot in women due to them typically being more open communicators.

if that consoles you, most people who live with someone like that do not believe that the person will ctb.

But yes, terrible news. Thank you.
I have these symptoms and I also struggle to hide it. and I've been successful...

I think there is merit in your supposition, especially if someone just casually mentions a suicide method for no particular reason, or simply as a joke.

I currently struggle with everything on the list except for giving away personal possessions. That would be too much of a red flag to even try to do. Although I have almost sold prized possessions this year, due to a total lack of interest. Hmm.

Interesting replies, another one that I read on a different list, was moving slowly, I was accused of this the other day, I am now making a conscious effect to move my butt but it's hard when you feel like you are wading through mud.

I know I have been accused of suicidal ideation when presenting SOME of the symptoms before, it's only now looking back that I see the two coincide, for me though it wasn't ideation, I did actually try but got accused of attention seeking.

This is an interesting point, if someone sits with plans for a while, and lives this way, then I guess it could almost become part of who they are, whether it's short term or long term
