1) Social contagion. People often adopt new beliefs from other people, for better or for worse, in order to fit in and be accepted. Many of us here understand that being excluded and left to rot alone is one of the most painful feelings out there. Social rejection has been shown to "hurt" in the same way as physical pain: link . Virtue-signaling pro-life beliefs can help people feel accepted and valued by pro-lifers.

2) Argument ad nauseam. When you repeat the same arguments and slogans, people will eventually come to believe them. If you repeat "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem," "don't do it," "it gets better," "think about your family," "talk to me," "call the suicide hotline," over and over again, eventually it'll start to have some hold on you, whether you like it or not.

I think a reason would also be the feeling of losing something. In this case your life. They look at life as property so they don't know why someone would want to "lose it."

The counterargument to this would be that sometimes you just don't want something, or that something is doing you more harm than good. I don't know, probably not even pro-lifers know why they think like they think.

We also cannot underestimate the impact of religion and old beliefs on current societal norms.

I think there are many pro lifers, because as humans we are programmed to survive and work through our problems. It is how we have evolved. Suicide goes against our natural instinct to survive, it is why many methods are difficult. I guess by taking away our right to die society pushes the view that we must live at all costs and there is stigma towards suicide. Many people have pro life beliefs as they want to keep other people alive out of selfishness.

It's lack of understanding, failure to really know what unbearable suffering is like, failure to see taking one's own life as anything but wrong, never thinking through why people take their own lives, not ever seeing any thoughtful discussions of suicide.

We need to open up discussions about suicide and stop making it a taboo subject.

It will always remain a knee jerk reaction to try to prevent all suicides as long as it's something people can't even talk about or think about.

they probably have relatives or friends that CTB, because they failed to give them support or realise they failed to notice they were suicidal, they think by trying to 'help' others it will somehow make that alright. In reality they might offer someone advise etc, but what actual good will that do, will it make most peoples lives improve. i think not. but then they won't be worried about that aslong as they 'help' some, so in theory some people are more important than others, such a nice way to think of people!!! they clearly weren't too bothered about the people they knew ctb, or they would of 'saved ' them and not tried to get involved with people they know nothing about/circumstances
