This in no way is meant to fear monger or scare anyone. But just me sharing my experience. I have recently failed an sn attempt on Wednesday night. It was because I drank too little sn and vomited it all up. I woke up Thursday morning feeling fine except for some soreness around my upper stomach, I assume due to me vomiting. That soreness is gone now (it's Friday for me so two days later). I have noticed that I'm not peeing as much as I used to even though I'm drinking a lot of water. Someone on here pointed out that I should go get my kidneys checked out because there was a study about sn causing acute renal damage in rats when tested. I have a feeling the sn did do at least something to my kidneys because my bathroom patterns are different than normal. It has only been two days so I will wait maybe a couple days and see if the patterns are still the same. I am not really able to just up and go see a doctor but if it becomes a big concern I will try. As of now I will just wait and see, I will try drinking more amounts of water as well. For some background I am of healthy weight for my gender and age group, I don't have any previous health issues either. I wonder if this will clear up on its own or not. But either way if you are thinking about using sn I just want you to know about how it can affect your kidneys. Some people may not have noticed what I did so I just wanted to share.

thank you for sharing your experience so that people can be informed of potential negative effects of not carrying out the sn method properly. i hope your condition gets better soon.

I understand that it damages from the stomach, as well as the liver and kidneys... I guess you can let it go...

Other people have reported damage to their stomach and liver? I haven't felt any nausea or headaches afterwards. I guess the only thing I've noticed is the stuff with my kidneys. I know there's been discussion on whether sn has any long term effects. I wonder if people just never notice their symptoms which is why we don't see anything posted. I know my symptoms were very unnoticeable. It would be easy for anyone else to just assume nothing was wrong. I have a feeling the symptoms are so mild that they go undetected. Interesting to think about…

Thank you I will. I am eating lots of berries and greens to see if it'll help at all. I really hope my body can just heal on its own but then again I'd never really know….

Of course! I remember there being lots of discussion on the long term effects of sn. Most people came to the conclusion that there was none so I just wanted to speak up. Thank you!

I'm so sorry to hear this OP. I'm really glad to hear you're not feeling sore and you're mostly back to normal, but the problem with kidney problems is that in many cases they are asymptomatic for a long time before they start impacting your everyday life (i.e., even if your bathroom patterns return to normal in the next day or two). The other important note is that the earlier you treat any potential renal issues, the easier they'll be to treat, and the more likely it is you will avoid needing dialysis. Renal issues, unfortunately, can get very uncomfortable and can compromise your quality of life significantly - I know other members have said that they'd be okay with that because they are trying to CTB, but you can easily live with renal failure for many, many years, especially if you don't have any pre-existing medical issues. Like I said earlier, if you're worried about a backstory, you can say that you were learning how to cure meat, and you put in too much SN (curing mix, otherwise known as Prague powder, is usually 6.25% SN and 93.75% regular salt - very easy to get wrong for a beginner).

I support whatever you choose to do, of course, and hope everything returns to normal as soon as possible

Thank you so much. I am scared to go see a doctor in case I will need dialysis. I am very scared of needles and I know that I will be poked many times if I need dialysis. That's why I am hoping things will go normal on their own. I am wondering if because of sn my kidneys are damaged forever now? I don't think I will tell the doctor anything I'll just tell them how I noticed I haven't been peeing enough. Will sn show up in any blood work I may have to do? I was thinking if they ask about sn levels in my blood I could pretend not to know what it is and if they explain it's a curing salt I could say that I did eat some meat a friend cooked. I wonder if that will work?

Please go to see a doctor if possible, just to be safe. Please drink a lot water to flush out your system, 3-5 litres a day. Even eating a lot of fibre or using electrolytes or laxatives should help clean your body of any sn

I am sorry about your symptoms after a failed sn attempt. This does happen when people use sn incorrectly, especially if they get sent to a hospital and get an antidote etc. This should clear up soon, if not please see your doctor.

I think the massive amount of sodium from SN, would be way in excess what the kidney's can filter and would likely cause "salt poisoning".

I understand your concern and being afraid of needles is something I struggle with too. And I also see how going to see a doctor could be a difficult financial choice.

However, the sooner you get this checked out the better.
Dialysis is only necessary once your kidneys have failed.
If you get treatment quickly, you can alleviate the effects and safe your kidneys with oral medication.

While you can't reverse kidney damage, you can absolutely slow down further damage and eventual failure.

So: one poke now to draw some blood will likely save you from needing dialysis down the road.

If are worried about your kidneys, you should see your doctor to be safe. He can do a blood and urine test, and he will be able to tell you exactly what your kidney function is, and if there is any damage.

You won't need dialysis. People only need dialysis with advanced kidney disease when your kidney function drops below 10 percent. Usually that takes years before the damage reaches that point. If your kidney function was that low, you would have other symptoms. If you do have any kidney damage, it is better to treat it early. Early treatment will slow down further damage.

. Will sn show up in any blood work I may have to do? I was thinking if they ask about sn levels in my blood I could pretend not to know what it is and if they explain it's a curing salt I could say that I did eat some meat a friend cooked. I wonder if that will work?

You don't have to mention the SN to the doctor. Just explain your symptoms to the doctor like you did here. Your body is able to process and get rid of nitrites within 24 hours. It has been several days, so your nitrite level most likely has already returned to normal.

I'm sorry that you had to go through an failed attempt. Failing ctb is what I fear and I can imagine that it must have been awful. Thank you for sharing the information. I hope that in whatever you do, you suffer as little as possible. Best wishes.

It is completely understandable that you'd be reluctant to see a doctor, but please know that dialysis will, in all likelihood, not be necessary at this point. You are seeing your doctor so that they can catch any potential problems early and prevent the need for dialysis in the future. You will likely be asked to do some bloodwork, which may involve one poke, but it will be much simpler than potentially letting your kidney function slide over the long-term - trust me.

Your kidneys are likely not damaged forever, but if you leave any acute (temporary) damage untreated, your current condition may become permanent. This is why seeing a doctor at this stage is really important.

The SN will not be detectable in your body at this stage - there is also no bloodwork that specifically screens for SN, so you're fine. That being said, my (humble) opinion is that it's best if you tell your doctor why you're concerned about kidney damage, because otherwise, you might not get the necessary bloodwork. If you tell your doctor that the curing salt you/your friend used may have been poisonous because of too much SN, your doctor will know specifically what tests to order and what type of kidney damage to look for. For your future health, it's also important for your doctor to know that you have a history of SN ingestion, because there might be other (non-invasive/simple) screening that they can offer you to make sure you stay healthy until you do (if you still want to) CTB successfully.

I totally understand why you have so much hesitation and fear around this, but trust me when I say that you will be better off taking care of this early. Sending you my care and all my respect for your decision, whatever it ends up being
