  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Should we be more explicit about the words we use?

While I love the term 'catch-the-bus' because its so creative and comes with a really cool feel to it. But does it softens what our intent really is.

Instead of "catch the bus" all the time, I am suggesting we explicitly say more often:

"I want to kill myself"
"I want to commit suicide"
"I want to hang myself"
"I want to die"

What is important is that you use the word "I" to clearly state you are talking about yourself.

I have decided that when I send my Goodbye note to SS, it will be timed and scheduled to be after I catch the bus.

It wil clearly say - "if you are readinging this, I have killed myself"

Yah i am not a big fan of euphemism and sugar coating shit. I think calling things by not what they are serves to wash things down subconsciously just to make it more palatable but at the expense of the communicated idea losing its spirit. Being outright explicit about things is my preferred modus operandi but I learned to cave in and talk in the common people's tongue

The term CTB is a euphemism which is used to sanitise a messy situation. But there is nothing wrong with using more direct terminology if you prefer.

Excuse me for being cynical, which doesn't happen often, but this sounds like an excellent way for journalists to search for specific words or phrases, and possibly even take the poster's writing out of context.

Actually I think that is a really interesting point. But CTB is also very searchable to so I am not sure it would make much difference. But thank you for the coment!

I would really like an alternative to "pro-lifer" because it inaccurately represents both sides. Can't think of an alternative offhand but what I think people mean by "pro-lifer" is someone who engages in paternalism and is insensitive and condescending. I think it is completely independent of wanting people to live and be happy which is what being pro life would imply.

Language is important. Our freedom of speech in this forum depends on our being able to use coded language, euphemisms, idioms, and implied meanings.

But also, language itself implies meaning. If I say "I want to kill myself" it implies, by cultural connotation, that I want to do violence to myself.

And nothing could be father from the truth. I want PEACE. I want to define my end in MY terms. And whatever language or imagery I choose to make my own passing peaceful is something I'm entitled to.

If I tell y'all I'm crossing the rainbow bridge, get y'alll's My Little Pony tails out to celebrate my crossing!

Death is on our own terms, and language is an essential characteristic of that.

They're basically anti-choice. Or pro-servitude. Your life isn't your own. It belongs to someone else, they believe.

I'm weary of this new December 14th member telling us what kind of language to use. I think anybody should be able to say what they like. Next thing he'll want is for us to write out what N stands for, so that we're "more explicit about the words we use."

CTB also was the original term used before the internet existed which is why people use it. Sanctioned suicide isn't a new concept. Back in Usenet days like early 90s there was a group created exactly like this in a group called alt.suicide.holidays.

It's like a homage to the Original group.

Might be a euphemism that hides the reality but for me personally it's a way to respect our elder community? And maybe like a secret code word for this community? Dunno I'm dumb. But tons of people say they want to kill themselves. But a lot of people don't know the ctb term
alt.suicide.holidays wasn't before the internet existed.
