Bullshit. I've had therapist not care about me killing myself after speaking of it. My last one even suggested I go to Oregon for euthanasia.
I think it must depend on the jurisdiction. Google it. You will see plenty of entries saying therapists are legally obligated to report.

I don't want to be as pessimistic as others here but generally, no. It takes a very specific personality to be able to know you're suicidal and not feel bad that you're gone and not feel like they could've done something. More likely it will make things worse for the person you're telling. Even worse than that is they respond negatively and you eventually get involuntarily hospitalized. The bare minimum is that you have to be sure they won't involuntarily hospitalize you.
