  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

I know there are other threads here about sharing movies and such about suicide, but I want to make a thread specifically where we talk a little bit about each one, and why we recommend it. So share some media (can be movies, tv, books, podcasts, etc.) about suicide that you like and say somethings about it.

I'll go first:

Harold and Maude is a unique movie about a death obsessed young man who falls in love with a very old woman. It's sweet, cheeky and hilarious, with a perfect soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

Curfew is a short film by Shawn Christensen about a man, played by Christensen, who is about to kill himself, but then the phone rings. He ends up going on an unexpected adventure with his estranged niece. It was so successful that a feature length film based on the short called Before I Disappear was made. It's not as good as the original short but I like how it expands on some elements of the short. I would recommend it if you have already seen and liked the short.

The Hours is a star studded film about Virginia Woolf based on her book Mrs Dalloway. It's thought provoking and the performances are superb. Made me want to read both the book Mrs Dalloway and The Hours which the film was based on.

It's not meant to strictly be about suicide but I feel like the ending of The Good Place (a show I've literally talked about hundreds of times here) can be considered about suicide. I say this because it made me much more comfortable with suicide and with dying in general.

Basically any human who enters the Good Place which is really just Heaven and which every single human has the opportunity to enter (as long as they can prove they've become good which everyone will have infinite chances to do) also has the option to walk through a door which will peacefully end your existence even in the afterlife. To me this is the ultimate pro-choice piece of media. You can walk through this door whenever you want meaning you don't have to get bored of eternal paradise. The characters in the show describe being ready as a very calming completeness that you feel when you've truly experienced everything you could possibly want to enjoy.

Now nobody knows for sure what happens when you walk through the door except that it will be peaceful and it will end your afterlife. The final moments of the show do get to show what happens though. Basically your essence returns to the universe and disperses but right before that, your essence gets to motivate one good deed to be performed on earth thus helping someone else get closer to eventually make it into Heaven.

I haven't seen the whole series but I watched most of season 1 and the finale!!! The finale had an impact on me as well, so much so that it kind of made me want to watch the rest of the show. I agree that it does come off as very pro-choice. It was also a very clever way to handle the concept of heaven in actual practice since I have always been sure that we would even get bored of heaven eventually, if the perception of time passing was anything like our existence here on earth.

The rest of series is fun in its own ways, and actually had some twists (though not as big as the season 1 finale twist). I like these twists though because they say a lot of truth about the flaws of the afterlife as many people believe it which is why the final few episodes are so good for fixing it.

Specifically the fact that no humans have made it into The Good Place in over 500 years and that this is not because of any interference of the Bad Place but simply because the world has become so complicated that actions as simple as buying tomatoes or giving someone flowers have become so riddled with unintended consequences that they costed negative points. I also appreciate the twist that even when someone did try to live as good as possible he was nowhere near close enough to getting in and his existence was utterly miserable (he had to drink his own piss basically).

I have watched Wonder Egg Priority and I really liked it, I'd recommend it but the ending is kinda meh, I wish the story would go anywhere but it's unlikely since it commercially flopped

I like this video because it shows a VAD with Lifecircle in Switzerland live.

I like this video because it shows the story of a VAD very realistically.

'Elephant Song' 2014 film I think is brilliant. Elements of mystery, suspense and tragedy. Great character development and great actors (in my opinion). Probably my favourite film on mental health also. I warn you though- if you intend to watch it- it's very sad.

Saw 'The Hours' a few months back and also found it moving and interesting. Need to watch it again really.
