Imo, they are dumb and just plain evil. They are completely black and white. "Killing yourself is a grave sin" - and no matter what! Like what the actual fuck? According to religion, it doesn't matter how much you are suffering. Get paralyzed from the neck down and doomed to sit in a chair and look out the window for 40 years, but don't you dare try to end your suffering! That's just plain sadistic. I want nothing to do with a God like that.

I don't believe in God either but I'm like 50% sure that something will happen after death. I don't see why these two things can't go together.

50% of me believe in nothingness after death and 50% of me believe something will happen - maybe reincarnation/rebirth, existence in another realm/dimension etc.

Well.. obviously it's to convince themselves they have a purpose. Otherwise they'd go insane.
You can also argue it's for power, like the rich pastors and stuff, but I'm not talking about those assholes.
Ever wondered why there's almost always churches and stuff around poor areas? It's the only thing they have left.
I respect their beliefs, it's really none of my business. As long as they leave me alone, as religion doesn't have a say in laws, I don't mind.
Also I believe they see it as a grave sin because it'd be like going directly to paradise or something, which I guess can be seen as cheating, so they'll be sent to hell instead.

Religion is a tool used to control people. "Religion is the opiate of the masses." I think that Christianity or Catholicism does condemn suicide (to keep people alive to be a slave to society and the system, duh). I always see people posting about how they're scared to go to hell for it.

I agree that it's evil, and many people's interpretation of this religion and use of hell as a control method is lacking in anything remotely resembling the "love" that this higher being is supposed to embody. this is just my experience, but i was raised being told about how hell was just waiting for me if I didn't stay "on the right path", and by "right" path, I mean the one society wants me on so I can be productive in making everyone around me happier despite my own misery. It's hard to get out of the mindset of being watched, or being judged for every single thing we do. I was taught that my body isn't mine, my feelings and questions are "the devil" and I should ignore everything except what would make this higher being (or, actually, the church) happy. They want money, blind faith and for people to give themselves, everything they own, and follow without question, despite the pain it brings them. Any questions are disregarded. Any desire for autonomy is considered evil. It's weird, because this higher being seems to choose some of the most backwards people to spread their message. Why not demonstrate the power of love and faith for those of us struggling?

It never made sense to me. I ran away as soon as i could. I didn't want to be like them. I don't want to be subject to an angry, vengeful, deity just to continue being miserable so they can watch me suffer in their name. I want to hope that there's a being of love out there that sees the way their image has been twisted by politics and religious zealots, and this being is eagerly waiting for all of us to arrive in order to show us that we never had to worry. It's complicated. Even knowing it doesn't make sense, I can't just stop feeling afraid. It's ingrained into my brain. I want to stop, but it's so hard to ignore an upbringing of being terrorized and put down. I feel too worthless to live, and too worthless for peace in death. I wish I had not been raised with any religion at all. It damaged me

If I remember correctly the problem with killing yourself in christianity is that your life doesn't belong to you, so killing yourself is the same as killing someone else - you are robbing a god from his possessions.

Imagine you were in some horrible accident. A car hit you while you were crossing the road. The car drove while the lights were red. It wasn't your fault in the slightest. You were just a the wrong place and the wrong time. You didn't die but you got paralyzed from the neck down and now you had to sit in a wheelchair for the rest of your life not even being able to wipe your own ass. Just plain torture for 40+ years. Every minute of every day you would just sit there wondering why in the hell you didn't just cross the road at another time or walked down a different road that day. The only humane and logical step here would be to apply for euthanasia. What kind of sick, sadistic God would let someone rot away like that?

Basically I'm talking about the movie "Me Before You" which despite being a bit cheesy, is actually a pretty good movie imo.

When I was younger, I had as much confidence in the existence of angels/demons/God as I did in say, the existence of other planets in the solar system. Which I'm sure sounds bizarre to some people, but my upbringing was a religious one. So I'd say indoctrination from youth, mostly.

When you're a kid, you're impressionable, and odds are there's no one you trust more than your parents. If you grow up with religious parents, or in a religious household/society/state, beliefs that seem absurd to an outsider capable of critical thought can become part of your internal model of reality early on. Every new bit of information that you receive in later years may be subject to critical thought, and the older/smarter you are, the better you'll be at distinguishing the true from the false. But ideas that were instilled in you long before your cognitive faculties developed— ideas that have, again, had time to cement themselves as part of your fundamental model of reality— are impervious to critical thought because you'd never think to subject them to it. That's why intelligent religious people exist— because great as someone may be at it, logical thinking generally isn't enough to escape an ideological prison.

Haha I actually had a small conversation with my religious family about this. I personally do believe in God cause I find it hard to believe all of this just came to be out of nothing. Also if there is no God for some reason life just seems more pointless.However even though I believe in God I'm not a Christian...I'm not going to dedicate my life to that.( My family doesn't know that )

but the conversation we had started with my dad saying I was obligated to him. One thing led to another and my mom popped in saying I wasn't and we ended up saying they were obligated to me up until I turned 18 (I'm 19 now) because they decided to have me.

I asked does that mean God is obligated to us. Basically my family believes God already paid his obligation. I know most people here don't believe in Jesus but basically he payed it by dying on the cross for our sins because the price of sin is death so he came as a man and dyed for us.

my father believes we are obligated to God but my mom doesn't as God gave everyone free will and let everyone do whatever they wanted. He did wipe off all of life except Noah due to how big their sins were and how much they sinned as he sent an angel to earth and the people tried to rape it.

but after he wiped everyone out he promised not to do it again cause he felt bad or something.

Anyway I didn't mean to make this a religious lesson as I'm not religious long story short God created us without our choice in the matter so we have no obligation to him he also gave us freewill to do what we want so I really don't think he hates those who commit suicide.

THe price of Sin is death that is apparently the law of life according to the Bible. Jesus dyed for us once but it's not enough or something so when the world ends those who still sin as the law of the universe goes as even God had to follow the law as he sent himself to earth to die. Those who sin will go to hell.

the Bible and God confuse me and I don't want to put my energy to God as he hasn't shown me any signs he sees my struggles and I don't want to exist. But I do believe God exist


I however think alot of religious organizations use it to control people. As I'm pretty sure in the Bible Jesus was sentenced to death by the church people because they believed he was from the devil as he opposed some things they said.
