I know that religion may be annoying to bring up but I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. Has religion made you more suicidal? Religious people are less likely to commit suicide but in my case I feel as if religion is one of the reasons I have been pushed towards suicide. More specifically, religion was used to justify a good portion of my mistreatment growing up. I still continue to pretend to be religious and am constantly forced to go to church even though it makes me more suicidal and brings back awful memories. I can't tell anyone that I'm not religious because A. I'd be completely ostracized by many of the people I know and B. I think pretending to be religious is one of the things that also hides the fact that I'm suicidal.

I understand you. I grew up as a gay Catholic. Very Catholic, actually. I even taught at a Catholic university and worked in churches for most of my adult life. I fully understand the statement of religion being used to justify your mistreatment.

I have recently lost religion and perhaps even lost God, if that's possible. It's strange, because so much of my life and identity was rooted in my religion. I don't quite know how to feel about it.

religious people make me feel more suicidal because they always dismiss the suffering and the cruelties in this life... they make things worse because they refuse to acknowledge that a kind god would never let a world like this to exist.. they choose to be blind ..they make me feel more alone

I've been a "Christian" on and off my whole life but I actually turned against god when I realized how messed up the world is. I think it is much better to be an atheist than to hate god. I do believe that if there is a loving god, then Christianity makes the most sense, to me at least. Christ's suffering would be the only thing that comes close to justifying our existence.

I think religion can both help and harm you.
Depending on how strongly you believe and how you apply the faith in your life.
It can give you a lot of strength and confidence.
But it can also be very burdensome - as @hʚll described it well.

The same thing happens with you, as a child I let myself be influenced by others because I constantly felt that I was wrong and that is how I let myself be influenced and joined the Jehovah's Witnesses.
My experience in that sect was 6 years, and it negatively affected my life, and even so because of the fact that I was bisexual and still am.
So, if you think about the fact that religion can repress you from being who you want to be or having a particular taste, from that perspective, religion can depress you, make you bad at yourself and even become suicidal.
