I was just wondering if anyone here was recommended reading about pro-mortalism. I was hoping people might have recommendations on papers, books, philosophers, etc who have written about pro-mortalism. I'm less interested in anti-natalism stuff as I already exist and have to accept that. But I am interested in learning more about the underpinnings of pro-choice. Because while intuitively I agree with a lot of the positions expressed about it here, I am interested in having a firmer grasp.

So if anyone has any resources, that would be greatly appreciated!

It's more of an extension of anti-natalism from what I've seen, but have you heard of Efilism?

I think Philipp Mainländer and his book "The Philosophy of Redemption or The Philosophy of Salvation".

Another callout for The Conspiracy Against the Human Race, great book.

David Benatar - The Human Predicament

Peter Singer - Rethinking Life and Death: The Collapse of Our Traditional Ethics

Emil Cioran - The Trouble With Being Born

Writings by Arthur Schopenhauer and Philipp Mainlander (who committed suicide so he has some credibility there)

You mentioned being interested both in pro-choice and pro-mortalism, as if they are similar. To me they are very different - pro-choice being about personal autonomy under the assumption that for some people, death might be a better option. Pro-mortalism would be that death is the better option for everybody. ( is that correct? )

I could be wrong, but I don't see sanction suicide and similar forums as being pro-mortalist, even though some individuals might hold that view. Rather I view them as pro-choice.

The previous replies were mostly about pro-mortalist books.
If you want pro-choice writings, maybe try the following. I have read most of these long ago, but I don't remember much about them to provide a further assessment.

Psychology and Psychiatry
* Rational Suicide, Implications for Mental Health Professional - James L. Werth Jr.
* Suicide Prohibition, The Shame of Medicine - Thomas Szasz

Philosophy
* Essays on Suicide and Immortality of the Soul - David Hume
* ASH FAQ part 4/4: The Debate

I would also add to this list the lecture given by philosopher of Yale university, Shelley Kagan about the rationality of suicide. It is on YouTube.

Obviously Schopenhauer, well, I think you've already read it
