I volunteer in a homeless shelter, and it's a pretty garbage place to live. However, what always strikes me is how caring a lot of the clients are to me and to each other. They look out for one another. They always hold open doors for me and help me during crisis situations.
I tell them I appreciate them every day I'm there and they reflect that back to me. It's lovely.
Also, someone brought a dog to the shelter today and that little white puffball of a dog lit up every homeless person in the room.
