I imagine both are important. If half the population is starving, I'm not sure they value being able to vote if that won't bring them the essentials they need to live. Not that I'm that wise on politics but I imagine it's populations who are struggling financially that will vote dictators in because they promise them a return to prosperity. I think people will give up their liberty if it means they don't starve to death. We're probably mostly privelaged on here in that the majority of us may not have known starvation or constant cold or fear of losing shelter. (Some will of course and- that must be terrible.)

I rather starve to death, than being tortured to death

The economy. Because I'm old and if things go to hell, well, I'll just ctb. Too many of you youngsters are struggling to barely get by. That is no way to live.

Both are useless to normal citizens. Just an illusion of free will.

If you want BOTH starvation and lost freedom, choose a dictatorship.
Choose not to choose.
If you want starvation only, chose democrazy.

In some things we are simpler animals than we want to be. We simply pay more attention to the price of eggs than to some high-flown slogans.

I don't really care about the results of the US elections, because for me it is just an illusion of choice, but if prices are rising people want change. Even if this change does not necessarily look better, or is radical.
For these reasons, among others, we see how "far-right" groups are gaining more and more support.
The economies of countries are looking worse and worse and people are moving away from the current order of things.
Economics defines politics and if necessary, people will bury democracy alive if they think it is the right solution (I do not say that I support it).

So, to sum up, I choose the economy. Although I do not necessarily want to kill democracy, because it is a risky game.

I ultimately chose economy. The country I am (Sri Lanka) is polarised into the majority and minority ethnolinguistic group, both of which are natives. Anyone from my minority ethnic doesn't stand a chance of ever winning - the minority-ethnic candidate for most recent elections referred to himself as symbolic because he knew he wouldn't win… So politics doesn't matter much for me because the democracy is a broken one, what really matters is if I can survive - and only the economy will give me that.
