My initial question for this thread was how many people watch gore in general. I think suicidal people and people from this forum watch way more gore than the average person. But there barely is data on that. For some people it might be a short period in their life during adolescence.

I might do another thread with the discussion how many average people watch gore? And how common that phenomenon is and which reasons there might be for that. Gore was very toxic for my mental health. I read it can cause PTSD. So my personal advice would be to stay away from it.

But I am interested about the results of this poll.

Maybe you can add the impact on your mental health when answering the poll in the replies.

I did watch gore in my late teens because I wanted to feel something, then stopped for the most part. From time to time I watch stuff from current events to keep myself grounded in the reality of the human condition in those events.

From time to time and actually idk but my mind is kinda ok with that ig. Like- Im fucking depressed but that has little to do with those videos. It doesn't has a good effect on me but it's not that bad for me. But while watching I'm often either in shock or laughing (its not bc I think it's funny my natural shock response is just laughing sometimes) but most of the time I don't really care at all idk I feel bad for the person but I often don't care about my own life. The reason I watch is mostly bc of my curiosity. I notice someone talking about a video and I have to search it up bc Im just curios. And Idk it doesn't feel right to say that but I like blood. I think it's really aesthetic and beautiful sometimes. But not so much in gore videos bc I like blood but not if it's too much. I don't even know if that makes any sense but for context I self harm and there I really enjoy the blood and even paint with it sometimes. Maybe sounds crazy but I already know there's something kinda wrong with me so yeeaahhh that's my experience. Anyway guys better you not watch them bc Im pretty sure it will have a negative effect on you

I don't know where to find it, so I can't watch it. Well, I did find that one large community of watchers, and I did appreciate a few videos in February and October 2023 - but my interest does not lie in gore, but in industrial accidents. This October I was prompted by my use of the elevator, so I went on to check how I may die in them. Now I jump in and out rather fast - all the while checking whether there are any people able to block me. But stairs are better anyway.

The real industrial videos are lathes and other spinning machines - it's absolutely hilarious to see people's lives forfeited in a millisecond, and there is no blood usually.

But torture videos, man-on-man? That's way too disgusting and moralistic. And people in the comments actually commented how "the thief deserved it"! Vileness incarnate. But then again, I'm a pro-mortalist and consider human existence a mistake.

Now there's a whole other genre - animal abuse. Animal welfare is what seems to unite both extreme liberals and extreme Hitlerians under one roof. Whereas I'm... neutral on the subject? I mean, in my real life, I don't even hurt insects (aside from moths whose infestation I have once every 2 years, it seems, but they wage war on me so it's fair), but I am afraid of dogs, and I outright refuse to like animals because I hate humans - why not hate every living kind equally?

I like crows, but they will eat my eyes. Such is existence which I detest.

I've seen a lot of gore. As someone who was born in the early 2000s (when the internet was kinda the Wild West), I had unrestricted internet access. People would sometimes reference certain popular gore videos that even non-gore-watchers probably recognize by name, or even link it in unrelated YouTube comments bc it was "funny." When I was in middle school, I was part of the "alt"/emo/goth scene. It was kind of a culture where me and my friends would dare each other to watch certain videos. I watched gore all the way up to high school. I still watch disturbing and banned movies, but not gore anymore. Still leaves a sick taste in my mouth. although I'm unphased by gore, i think it's extremely exploitative of mostly innocent individuals and definitely not good for your brain.

I watch car accidents, or industrial, train, electricity accidents. I usually don't like real gore, like cartel stuff with dismemberments and horrible tortures, I stay away from those. I don't watch it every day now, but sometimes I return on /gif/ to see what's being posted. I don't think it harms my mental health, in the end this is the real world.

I watched supposed cop 'copter footage of a fugitive blowing his brains out with a shotgun. Due to the poor video quality, you couldn't see much, but it still shocked me. I have never been interested in seeing more, no matter how bad my suicidal ideation gets.

At first I watched gore, it was because someone on an online game had sent me a link to an extremely well-known video of the snuff genre. I was a kid and it traumatized me pretty badly.
But after a few years I started visiting 4chan and watching gore videos on /gif/ time to time, mostly because I needed to be sure I was able to have empathy for others, that I wasn't a monster.
I don't search for it anymore. I hate my life but I know in my heart I'm not a bad person now.

Not intentionally at least. Came across too many though when I was younger. Some people really seem to want kids to see that sort of stuff against their own Will :|
At least now its less shocking if I stumble upon it. Desensitised to it Over time

Nah it's too much even for a pretty depraved fella like myself.I've came across it sometimes and was pretty disgusted...seeing splattered brains and how we are just meat and brain really makes the human body much more disgusting. It also makes the idea of death less appealing for me

I mostly watch fictional stuff - if it's in anime or an obviously fictional movie/tv show. Old (70s/80s) slasher horror is cool.

The last time I intentionally saw real gore was back when rotten dot com got huge, in the early 2000s. Only went there two or three times before I lost interest.

i only really look at gore when i'm in a really bad place. it's not pretty to look at nor is it comforting, but it reminds me that death is gruesome a lot of the time. it doesn't snap me out of anything but it sort of…helps those urges to go away or lessen.

I have unrestricted internet access since I'm 6 years old and have seen very little gore in that time period. I was very young and saw sites like ogrish and rotten dot com or what have you accidently and what little I saw was enough. I've seen very depraved fictional gore in horror movies but I rarely watch horror films these days or even very violent films. The interest if there ever was one has mostly vanish in such things.

I never voted, so now I've voted for "sporadic" - although it has increased from 1 per year to like 4 times in 2023.

But then, define "gore". I will always dislike blood, maiming and (human) torture. I have discovered that I absolutely adore industrial accidents, however - there's something hilarious about a random person disappearing for no reason at all in the cogs of industrial machinery. Or getting run over by a heavy forklift. Or getting sucked into a lathe (new word I've learned). Fits right with out chaotic, meaningless reality. And it looks like their deaths are usually swift (let alone comical).

Again, I would stay far and clear from any burning substances, they hurt too much and are kind of miserable (although explosions are fun, admittedly).

Unfortunately, I think I've seen all industrial accidents on watch people die, and there's nothing else? Feel free to DM me if you dare. I guess, I'm bored out of my mind sometimes.

I used to watch some gore when I was younger. Obviosly it wasn't good for my mental health so now I avoid it. I might look at some crime scene or autopsy photos because I'm a true crime junkie but not too often. I don't think it's good to get desensitized to that.

My husband gets a kick out of it and has shown me at times. Honestly, it's affected my view of the world and has contributed to my loss of faith in humanity. Such atrocities inflicted on fellow human beings...

(I'm referring to the murder/torture gore specifically.)

Yeah those really disgust me. Not the gore part but the cruelness. The fact other humans can do that to people without even flinching or hesitating...it's unreal to me. The comment sections on gore sites also disgust me because people are usually racist , fatphobic and sexist. They feel joy with others suffering.

I prefer watching gore of accidental accidents or someone commiting suicide or harming themself. Because no one else is doing it to them.

I don't really enjoy gore I just watch it to get myself less scared of death
