Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles

In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

Me and my friends are really fucking pissed. And in some corners of the internet they even welcome this decision. Personally, I only buy games used. It saves me so much money. I buy the disc version of a game 90% of all cases. I find it impertinent. One does not even own the game anymore when the servers are off. My friends hate this aspect more. For me it is more about the money. I already ruminate whether my PS5 was worth the buck because there were not that many convincing games for me. Moreover, the PS6 might cost over 1000 bucks. I probably draw a line here. Nowadays, I have two consoles Nintendo Switch 2 and Playstation 5. The latter one especially for Fifa and Battelfield and some other franchises. I probably will have to say goodbye to some Playstation franchises. And I assume this development will be irreversible. My friends flirt with the idea to quit modern gaming. Personally, I am less principled I care mostly about the money. And I will have money issues in the future. My way of gaming isn't that expensive. I know a bold take if one has two consoles. But I re-sell many games after finishing them and I love some free2play games where I don't spend money. This is a really depressing news. And other publishers will most likely copy this decision. Fuck it.

I bought a used Nintendo Wii a while ago and did the jailbreak thing so now i can just download games and install them via a SD card. Is that possible with newer consoles? Sorry if that's a dumb question but I grew up gaming on PC so my knowledge is limited when it comes to consoles.

You can hack modern consoles, but there's a much greater risk so homebrewing is mostly reserved for discontinued consoles where there's no risk of a software update narcing on your to sony.

Makes me sad that I sold all my physical games and consoles when I was younger. At ScamStop too, the place that would give you like $10 for three tall stacks of absolute bangers with discs in good condition. Been a PC gamer for many years now.

Also makes me worried because I collect blu-rays for my favorite anime.

Lately I've been emulating. I would encourage people to look into this, as I fear it won't be long before steps are taken against it. Playing Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront 2, etc, has been so much fun. You could also check out GOG... doesn't solve the physical media aspect, but generally speaking you're able to own your games that way.

I don't know how to sail the seas and I'm too paranoid. It's hard to find somebody who actually knows what they're doing *and* I can trust them *and* they'd trust me lol. Emulating is the closest I can get. I've wondered about burning games onto discs (games w/o DRM or whatever) but idk if they'd be playable like a normal disc. Which is a shame, because it'd be cool to buy blank cases, print some nice box art covers and make my own physical media lol.

It's all just another reason why I'm glad I'm not immortal. Everything keeps getting worse. Everything.

I don't like it. WIsh I could afford a Blu-Ray collection so streaming services couldn't remove things at will. Now that won't even be possible for games - we'll never really own anything.

Hate it as well. I've only bought three games online (that were on sale) and purchased the rest of my inventory from GameStop, Best Buy, etc. One thing that makes me sad is that the excitement of hunting for a game or even receiving one as a gift will be gone. I think it's a lot more memorable when it's in person. I remember a day before Sony announced that, I excited myself thinking about re-playing a few of my games, but now I can't get myself to boot up my PS4 Nothing in life seems to get better. Even the things that keep you afloat.

One thing I haven't seen people talk about is the actual 'going to the gameshop' part about buying the game. Most people I've met at those shops have been really cool and are really into the whole medium. Really sad that these stores are basically done for now knowing that they're on their last legs.

I wouldn't risk it. Japanese companies hate piracy. They'd probably brick your console.
