Being unemployed I have experienced loneliness and prejudice. A couple of months ago my mother ordered Macdonalds using Ubereats and I ended up answering the door. My mum wanted to tip the Ubereats driver so I had to wait for her while she was getting the money. The Ubereats driver was a young man who started taking to me while waiting.

He asked me my age and if I was working. When i said no the delivery man said in the most patronising tone ever " you should be working " and I could see an eye roll he gave me. I was upset that day as result I stopped talking to people and avoiding people althougher so I will not encounter anymore prejudice from people over my employment status.

I told my story one reddit everyone called me a liar the comments were just horrible. I am not a liar

As an UberEATS driver myself, I agree.

That's not to say all of us should act like automatons, although that's my default behavior on the job, but if that's how you interact with your client, piss off.
Also, if it's anything like here they get a bonus if they recruit someone with a referral code. So maybe he was just trying to sell you off to Uber for a handful of dollars

my step dad gets on my ass all the time about having a job, he started as soon as i turned 16. i got a job when i was 17 and it lasted until earlier this year. im 18 now and he believes that because i dont have a job again, im below all other kids younger than me and they are better than me. but nothing will ever satisfy people who complain just to complain. when i had a job, he was upset that i didnt work enough hours. when i changed my schedule to fit me being in school (i couldnt work mornings and i was tired of waking up at 5:30 am for work anyway), he got upset at that and said that i should be working the schedule he wants me to work. ive given up at this point. theres no point in trying to please people that i will never please.

Flare No it gets worse he was just bragging. He then asked me if I drive . He told me how he can a pass the an entire driving test with his eyes closed.
He was so patronising. I was just so upset because he is judging me in my own home. I didn't choose to be unemployed. I was someone who took school and university seriously but struggled after leaving university to find a job and to adjust to life outside of university

Serio I have a job now but mentally being unemployed has destroyed my confidence as a person . I live in fear of being unemployed again . I am obessed with stability and worry about losing it again.

I am enjoying and doing well in my job but I do have a lot of insecurity.

WatermelonMel It doesn't make sense why would I lie about that. It is so hurtful because we are always told to reach out but when you do nobody wants to listen everyone just judges.

Majority of comments were talking about how I am a troll and liar. Saying how it nots possible.

Others criticised me for being unemployed too long and others used the sub to bash unemployed people.

This was a sub for British people. To think these people on this sub actually mix with society is actually scary.
If you notice , most of the people who run the world almost never work.

work is for dupes . The smartest among us figured that out a long time ago
SuicidallyCurious you are right . Most politicians never even worked in minimum wage jobs or struggled with money.

We have wealthy politicians that live off their parents wealth and can just enjoy their hobbies. For some people politics is a hobby and less about finding solutions to help fix communities.

The public are blind to this. We have members of the public that criticise people for working later in life.
One person said on twitter how can you be in your twenties never having a job.
Others say " I have been working since I was 16 or 17"

If you don't work as a teenager society does look down upon you.

If anything i can see that totally happen. Some people are just, ugh. So sorry that happened to you, man.

Butterflycollector I really hate parents like this because getting an education and qualifications is important.

It is hard to balance school and work together if you are very young. When I was in school we were even told by our teachers to work less hours so the part time job doesn't clash with schooling. A lot of teachers in the school knew young people who worked part time jobs due to financial difficulties or problems at home and the teachers were very understanding.
I would've complained to UberEATS. The drivers are supposed to deliver food, not criticism.
I don't like complaining to the manager. I know it sounds weird because being British we love to complain.

I believe you. People are usually quick to make assumptions about people they've just met. And since money is the one true God of this world, people tend to define themselves through their "job." Also, there are some people who believe they are better than everyone else and have an exaggerated sense of self-importance, so they quite regularly speak to others in a patronizing tone.

Zzzzz People on the reddit sub were even defending the Ubereats driver.

"I get Uber driver's point of view. Anyone with a driving licence can sign up to do that job, he kinda had a point."

"Well, who doesn't work, doesn't eat. Simple.
In society everyone should work and pull their weight. We do take care of people who can't due to illness. During Covid lockdown, many people were laid off and ended up in dire situation. But many had no choice but to work and couldn't self isolate, like your uber eats delivery man, who probably wasn't English bit migrant. From the perspective of person who has to work to keep the food on the table, yes, unemployment is a tragedy on one hand, and laziness on other. But having meltdown over it is at least childish. Lesson learned. Good luck at work."

Sounds like he needed to prove himself better than someone. What a dick. Congrats on the new job.
Myono93 Thanks :) Being unemployed is just lonely. I felt so excluded from social gatherings, friends, family etc because everyone talks about their job. One time I attended a church meeting for the voluntary work I do and people in the meeting were talking about how covid19 changed their workplace. One person in my church was a teacher doing lessons on zoom and another person was worked in an ICU ward . I felt so left out as people in my church talked about their cool stories of working during a pandemic whereas I did nothing during the pandemic.

I found so hard to participate or talk to people because I wasn't working like them.

Unfortunately people can be very unkind and judgemental sometimes. I don't think they understand what mental illness is. Work can be reasonably impossible to do with severe mental issues. I myself cannot work and very likely will be dead before I work again and I have been called lazy or unwilling. Very few people understand how difficult it is.

Why would anyone willingly choose to work; or take pride in working?

We work because we have to, and only a lucky few genuinely enjoy the work they do and love getting up to do it everyday. I commend those who can escape the system and live happy lives outside of it. However, I would take someone's job status into account if I were choosing a partner. You have to in that scenario, because I don't think anyone wants to be someone else's free meal ticket.

I have no problem being someone's friend though if they are unemployed. Who cares if they work or don't, we are still humans sharing a planet together.

Zzzz it's not fair we are always told by society to speak up if you are depressed but when people do they are faced with judgement and ignorance all the time. It's the people that preach mental health that always are biggest arseholes. The same reddit sub I used there are posts about about mental health.

AnxiousSchizoid this happened to me while UK was still in lockdown

The worst thing is people have learned nothing from the pandemic despite the mass unemployment and financial hardships people experienced the judgemental attitudes towards those unemployed still exist.

You are such a wonderful soul. You are right we are humans sharing a planet together. Take care my friend

The working class have a massive chip on their shoulder. If they didn't have to work, they wouldn't either.

But because they are forced to, they buy into delusional concepts like "taking pride in their jobs", and establishing their job as a part of their core identity.
