Hi all. I tried to buy a cylinder of nitrogen last week but they asked what I wanted it for and I couldn't answer. So I told them I was buying for a friend and they said they needed to know before they'd sell me it.

Can anyone tell me a legitimate reason to buy a cylinder of nitrogen and a regulator/flow meter

Welding and brewing seem to be the main individual uses for it.

I mean, I guess so. You had already said you were buying for a friend so I guess they wouldn't expect you to have any expertise on it. If they're too suspicious to give you it you can always try another place and go in with more confidence.

I've read in the first post of the Inert Gas megathread of someone using nitrogen to flood paint cans to displace oxygen out of paint cans and prevent the paint from skinning over and going bad. That could be another good reason to use if anyone else asks you again in future.

Can you opt for home delivery? You have to research the uses. Look up some introductory videos on welding, home food packaging business can also be an excuse. It's a pain in the ass to do all this but it will give you the best chance of getting what you want.

It's a shame that they make it so hard for adults to just go the way they decide to go.
I mean it's an uneasy way, with lots of preperation and precautions needed before being able to do it which requires a calm and focused mind. It rules out actions in which you just do it from one moment to another without having thought out what you are doing.

And they still trying to find ways to make things even harder for individuals.

Who the heck are some people to think that they own other grown up people?

Can you direct me where to buy this online? you were actually able to get a filled tank delivered? All I see is a lot of places just selling an empty tank, which I would need to fill somewhere. I just moved to a new state and I am not very familiar with the area, so buying online would be ideal. Thanks

The supplier where I bought it is for EU, not valid for you.

You can buy a full cylinder or an empty one and fill it locally.

it is not my intent to talk to you in or out of any course of action, but I want to share my own personal experience in a trial run for acquiring a nitrogen cylinder (USA): I went into an Airgas store and told the staffer that I needed a nitrogen cylinder to supply gas for a Winekeeper that I intended to give to my significant other as a gift. I was told that I needed food grade nitrogen, and that it would cost a few more dollars but I did not quibble over the additional cost so as not to raise suspicions. The total cost with deposit for the cylinder was under US$300. It may be helpful to put on a happy face and have the wine keeper product page loaded on your phone so you can show the store. These suppliers are used to dealing with welders and other industrial tradespeople so for a layman to come in and ask for gas, it would be very helpful to have a backstory already intact. Whatever course of action you end up taking, I hope you think it through soberly, meditatively, and don't just make a rash, impulsive decision. Also, if you are serious about this, you will need to be patient and plan carefully. For the sake of the people who love you, try to get your affairs lined up beforehand, including a note (extensive if you're feeling generous), list of passwords and Internet accounts, and I suppose most of all you should have a legal will. If you have any excess money, make a choice between leaving it to a person or persons about whom you care or to a legitimate charity.

Edit to add: I decided on a "forty," or 40lb cylinder to make sure I had plenty of gas to do the job. It is about the size of a carry-on suitcase.

Are you from the us ?

Anyway go with brewing as a reason. Welding works but they might direct you to argon. For welding PVC / plastic nitrogen can be used.

i'm in the us and I just went to my local gas store and said I needed nitrogen for my friend who wants to make nitro coffee. Got no further questions. I made an effort to not look depressed which actually wasn't too hard because I was happy to be acquiring my exit plan. I would recommend not talking too much, don't add unnecessary details-- that looks suspicious.

Can someone write or message me where can I safely order nitrogen in Europe? There are many websites but I am afraid of being scammed.

There is a difference between the continent of Europe and EU. Packages shipped from one EU country to another EU country are not checked by customs. There are reputable well known vendors in the EU. You can find them on google or in the yellow pages of each country. Please do never use google.COM, when you live in Europe, but the domain of each country (.de, .pl., .it.....). And as I said before regarding SN: If the vendor doesn't ship to your country, rent an address at MBE (or other mails forwarding service) and MBE will forward the package to you or you pick it up there.

I also ordered my 5 L gas cylinder from another country and it was shipped as a normal package with a dangerous goods sticker. No one has asked any questions.
