Earlier in the evening I was being fucking stupid and decided that texting a 988 number might help me with my problems and in that moment it did but then an hour later the cops like the literal cops knock on my door and say that they got a call from the police station of the random zip code I entered that this was the up address of the person texting. Never fucking use those sites, they can and they will find you. The only reason I was able to get out of it was because of a recent security breach in my area where I was able to say that it was probably someone stealing my IP, was it super believable probably not but it got them off my back. Now it's almost 11pm and I'm shaking and can't fall asleep because I'm scared the cops are going to show up again and hospitalize me.

I'm beyond sorry you had to experience that OP. This punitive approach to suicidal people is insidious as hell

What the hell man :/

Honestly I like the idea of the hotline and I've thought about trying it for the reason you did but never have because of stuff like what happened to you. Like the fact that you can be not on the verge of attempting and still get your privacy invaded like that is insane to me. Definitely discourages so many people from reaching out to get anonymous help which is not something I think anyone wants wherever they fall on the suicide debate.

hotlines and hospitals don't help man they just babysit you and patronize you nobody understands your woes and issues besides yourself and trying to get help is pointless they kick you down the whole uphill battle of pushing a fucking boulder up a hill.

i think it depends on where you're at with suicide but yeah in the case of the majority of people here i am sure you are correct

they put you on medications halfassed whichever pays the hospital the most it's all about money the food's okay but you have to ask for bigger portions in some states or they'll starve you

it's not helpful that much because it's a business not an act of selflessness*. people don't care about suicide because they care about you it's because it makes them feel bad and guilty.

I can also confirm this. I mocked the "counselor" I was talking to for suggesting that "going out for walk" would cure my suicidality. Then I said I was just going to simply end the chat. He/she said that if I left without discussing my intentions any further, that he/she would have to send the cops to my house. I then immediately said "you know what? ...A walk actually sounds kind of good. I'm going to try that right now. Thanks for the help." And was able to stave off the cops being sent.

Cops are equipped with many many ways to find out exactly where you are, ranging from cellphone triangulation to Facebook geolocation settings. One time I made a cryptic post that illuded to ending my life on FB. It made my ex-wife end up calling the cops because she didn't know where I was. The cops used the GPS metadata from the post to find me. I was in my car parked on the side of my house where I nornally never park it. I was literally on the other side of wall from my wife inside the house.

Fuck these hotlines. They're worthless and staffed with nothing but self-righteous, pro-life NPC dweebs that are trying to fullfill their fantasy of being heroes, because they have no skills otherwise that would garner them any kind of admiration in the real world.

Was drunk and desperate earlier and almost dumb enough to text one of these hotlines. I'm very glad I didn't. I don't understand how sending cops to a potentially suicidal person's residence does anything to help the situation

I've been involuntarily admitted twice. Both times I had to lie and say that the medication they gave me was working instantly, even though SSRIs take weeks for efficacy. They probably let me out on the grounds that I was under a placebo effect.

Yeah… like this isn't a crime like cops are used to dealing with where they can give you a warning/slap on the wrist so you just go back to normal. Crazy wrong solution to the problem

Same here, but a little different. I had a break down while texting a crisis line and ended the convo because I felt like the person wasn't listening. 10 minutes later, I get a call from the Police Department in my area. Shook me for a while.

I've called before but felt they didn't care very much as it was. It's supposed to be a crisis hotline and yet you get connected to the most uncaring disconnected robot possible. Not a hint of empathy at all, just a script for them to read. My Halloween decorations have provided more comfort than the hotline.

I always had a feeling 988 would totally do something like that. It's why I never called beside the one time I was forced to by my counselor in highschool. It sucks that we can't trust professionals to be rational; You can't save everyone so why bother trying?

That is horrible but I'm not even surprised that happened, I've heard of that happening before. Sadly we exist in this hellish anti-suicide society where people are punished simply for wanting to die with many people doing all they can to try and force other people to continue suffering.

It's terrible that the police can even get involved, after all people always say suicide is legal, but it's really not if the police will arrest a suicidal person. I would never recommend the hotlines because the people who run them have no idea what they're doing, and calling them is a significant danger to yourself, even if you don't tell them you will ctb.

I ended up calling it. Glad I was driving and hung up way before getting home. It was honestly the most useless call I've ever made. Just the most typical responses and no sense of emotion.
