I just watched a documentary about everyday life of a nursing home / retirement house. They celebrated new years eve and the reporter asked an old lady "what's your new years wish?". The old lady responded with "Are you asking seriously? I want to die in my sleep as soon as possible". The reporter reacted surprised and was obviously shocked by her serious and honest statement. He probably doesn't understand that nursing homes (in Germany) are little hellholes, where the staff is stuffing food into your mouth if you don't eat quickly (time pressure, capitalism). Pity she doesn't know N exists. The reporter of course told her about the beauty of life and made her feel even more miserable.

Another documentary about euthanasia in Belgium (Maybe some of you have watched it on youtube). An old lady with severe chronic depression is granted the wish to drink a deadly cocktail in a nursing home. All the co-inhabitants in the nursing home are evading her at her last day. Nobody really wants to say goodbye. Maybe they think it's unfair that she is granted a peaceful death and they aren't? They think it's unfair that they have to wait for their painful heart attacks and seizures to die? I'd be envious. Many old people would love to have a controlled and peaceful death as well after seeing how it gets granted it to a few. It'd be seen like a priviledge. Even young people. Read the comments on Dignitas videos where people die with N. A lot of people ask "What is he/she drinking?". They are interested.

So imagine people having the chance to die peacefully whenever they want. It will lead to mass suicide. And no society would tolerate this. Old people in nursing homes, lovesick people, depressed people, disabled people, many would use N. Maybe even the dude who makes burgers every day. He'd see no sense of being a wage slave. Since ending life is so easy, unwanted people would be easily being pushed to suicide by N. Because it's quick and painless. I am saying this though I am pro-choice.

I am writing this because I am frustrated. I want to die with people at my side, controlled. But these are the reasons why I will die alone and why one shouldn't hope for change in society. Most of us even will not met the strict criteria of euthanasia. Unemployed, depressed, social anxious, handicapped - they will tell us to get a job or a therapy. Only the showcase sick would benefit.

I read a comment of a person hoping that N would be legal in a few decades. What do you guys think? Am I too pessimistic?

Tbh, it might be legal in places OTHER than America.
Bc America "loves" us, and wants up to keep living. :))

I wish it was legal' -people deserve a dignified death. It's heartbreaking seeing the lengths people will go to end their life..they are struggling so much.

'But amitriptyline cocktail is' so is a rope. Although I'm not sure if it's legal !

@NextSummer ,

'I read a comment of a person hoping that N would be legal in a few decades. What do you guys think? Am I too pessimistic?' Who knows what the world will be like in a few decades ? I don't think I'll be around to see it. For the forseeable future, I see things getting worse. On a global level.

Well, N was legal few decades ago, I don't think it will ever be again.
