making friends here

Hi, I'm not sure if this is wrong to post so let me know. I mostly joined this site looking for friends because I feel like I'm going crazy keeping all my thoughts inside. The friends I have irl are so happy and functional, and I don't want to burden them or scare them. Posting on a public forum is pretty out of my comfort zone. If anyone wants to PM, I'd be happy to talk :) Or if anyone has advice on making friends here, I'd also appreciate that.

Thanks for explaining so kindly :) I'm actually super clueless, so if I click on someone's profile it gives me the option to "start chat" and "start conversation" but these aren't the same as PM? Sorry if this is a really dumb question

Welcome to the forum. I hope you find some comfort here. I know what you mean. I guess even the most solitary of us still hope to find connection. I would just say, be careful though. Just bear in mind what kind of forum this is and who it attracts. Some people here may well be entirely serious about taking their lives in the near future. So, I think you have to take on board that any contacts and connections you do make could well be lost some day. I suppose I still think it's worth it but, it hurts to lose people you felt in some way close to. Then, there's this weird situation where you can't tell people in real life because that would likely reveal where you 'met' them. But, that's jumping ahead. I hope you find what you're looking for here.

Thanks for the kind words. You're right, I can't really imagine what it would be like to get close to someone online and then lose them. I guess I will (somewhat naively) continue to try to form connections though, because at least we can comfort each other for a time.

Those are the options to PM. I thought members need more posts then you have to unlock PM. "Start chat" opens a classic PM chat box and "start conversation" opens a private thread, or it's the other way around. I don't remember.

It hurts. It's happened a couple of times here now for me but I agree- I still think it's worth it. Otherwise, we are just alone with our thoughts. I guess it's just something to bear in mind though. I hope you have good experiences. There are some lovely people on here.

I think the key is knowing at the outset that the relationship has a different nature to it than an in-person one. I've had a few "internet friends" through the years, and remember them fondly even if we don't talk anymore. (ahhh, Twitch Plays Pokemon. I miss ya'll.) My PMs are always open here, although I can't guarantee continuous availability. It can be nice to talk to someone anonymously online. In some ways, you can be yourself more than IRL.
