MAID postponed over fear of a eugenics program and allowing the mentally ill a legal right to die in Canada. This was the last straw for me. Ive been waiting on this for years.

The funny thing is doctors tell me there's nothing they can do to help, yet physically ill can end their lives easily through MAID under the same pretense and I can't. They restrict most methods to ctb in Canada. Helium, sn, guns (difficult and long process). When I went to the ER, they tried to form me. I'm now part of an antipsychiatry movement.

They tell me I'm hoping on a pill to save my life when they want to lock me up and shock my brain. Lost a friend few months ago from the psych ward, no help or assistance police released him and he died in the woods. I was told by therapists that I "slipped through the cracks". Severe BPD and ctb is my only option. It's not getting any better and I've lost everyone due to my own disorder.

I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this... As a fellow Canadian, I definitely feel for you on the MAID front.

So sorry about your situation.

It must be frustrating to be in a country where MAIDs actually a thing yet you're restricted from accessing it.

You could always hold out for hope that they'll reverse this decision. I think when I researched it I found that they're revisiting the mental health clause sometime next year? All other methods just seem inferior to me when you could just walk into a doctors office get a shot and that'd be it. Or getting prescribed medication that allows you to go peacefully in your own home.

I've always had a bad gut instinct that Canada would delay MAID's expansion to people with mental illnesses/disorders. It wouldn't surprise if it gets delayed again and again for god knows how long. Despite acceptance of the positives of euthanasia slowly rising, the majority people around the world still show far too much negativity about the practice, and sadly people like you are suffering because of it.

Hopefully these forums and people here can help you find the CTB method you need to end your suffering as peacefully as possible.

It must be so incredibly disappointing to have your option of legalised assisted suicide postponed, I very much envy those who are able to access it, I see them as being fortunate. But it certainly disgusts me how people restrict suicide method options and just expect people to suffer instead, this world certainly is hell. Psych wards sound like absolutely horrific places, I believe that they just cause more torment to be experienced.

im canadian and on disability due to mental illness. so yes getting rid of maid for the mentallly ill is a huge bummer. i wish adam mayer clayton was still around to fight for the cause. i probably wouldnt have used maid but it would have been a relief for people with debilitating mental illness

I think it can feel that way mainly because those 'in power' and 'in society' feel this way and make it a controversial and taboo subject. But in reality, from what I've seen, polling generally shows vast majority of populations supporting euthanasia. As with most movements, it takes a while to break through centuries worth of accepted thought.

Its such a shame… i kind of get the point with eugenics but its a choice that people are making themselves, and i imagine theyre not gonna let just anyone do it. hopefully we get it in 2024 and they dont throw it out or delay more

How ?
You can have SN from IC (which is in Canada). Helium and Nitrogen tanks are easily available everywhere in the world.

I am from Canada and was devastated when the gov announced in Dec. they were postponing the March '23 date when folks with mental disorders were supposed to become eligible for MAiD (medical assistance in dying). We have already waited two years longer than everyone with somatic nonterminal illness, and there has been extensive work done to report and prepare over those two years.

I am considering taking up some activism on this topic and I wondered if anyone (especially but not limited to Canadians) here would be interested in joining me? 😊There is so much press coming from the pro-life side, especially many psychiatrists and disability rights activists, that I feel we need to make more noise advocating for those with treatment resistant mental illness to have fair and equal access to MAiD, which is what the Supreme Court has ruled.

To start there should be a website devoted specifically to promoting MAiD for eligible people with mental disorders. Dying with Dignity has some info, but I feel there needs to be a MAiD for SUMAC (sole underlying condition mental disorder) site to try to balance the constant pro-life, disability rights hysteria and keep the pressure on the gov and psychiatrists. The gov and public are getting the message from psychiatrists and disability rights advocates that this should not be expanded, and this will lead to less people being approved in my opinion, which is absolute cruelty—again, my opinion.

Anyone here, especially Canadian or wanting to do MAiD activism, do web design or interested in getting involved? It could also allow others from this site with treatment resistant mental conditions to share their stories, either on video or written, around seeking a peaceful, self-determined death, and the cruelty of not having access to such. In my opinion these (our) voices are being dangerously drowned out by disability rights activists. Those who share stories wouldn't have to be limited to Canada. It could raise awareness globally.

Here is one of the few recent articles I found representing someone seeking MAiD in a more sympathetic light. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6749195

We should all protest by doing the Heaven's Gate movement by taking a whole bunch of Phenobarbital and putting plastic bags over our heads! I know where we can find a great amount of Phenobarbital. /joke XD

Even if it became legal tomorrow, there is still stringent criteria that need to be met and then someone would be " oh well, you haven'y tried that many drugs, this kind of psychotherapy, or electric shock therapy....".It will be impossible to find providers doing this work, they will see it as too risky, especially it being so new and they can easier make money doing therapy and prescribing drugs. It is unfornunate... And there are way too many people who believe life is a bliss and blessing advocating against MAID, so every single politician voting for it and healthcare providers working it are called murderers.
