I find it strange the fact that I hear from several people, mainly on social networks, that all lives have the same value, at least when they talk about suicide and related things. "All lives matter".

I think this is actually not true. Not every time someone dies people care. Speaking of age, for example, I don't see almost anyone who really cares when someone over 40 commits suicide. In fact, speaking of young people, it seems that there is a greater concern when they decide to die. Like suicide is underrated or overrated based on age.

Even worse, I see that in many cases people end up saying "he was so talented", as if talent defines whether or not someone "deserves" to be alive. It's like the person is usual. When you don't have much to offer, your life doesn't matter anymore. Anyway, that's how I look at these things.

We like to say "oh it doesn't matter who or what you are we are all equal". The hell with that if we were all the same then we shouldn't have to require x amount of people from minorities when hiring. Also "The US is going through a mental health crisis, and it has ramped up in children" ok what about me?

No one gives a damn if I say I want to ctb but if some child said it or someone from a minority "WE WILL GET YOU HELP CALLING 911 RN" like genuinely give me a break. We truly live in some day and age.

The value of life is an individual interpretation. For someone who is happy with his life and who has everything they wish for, it has a high value for the other one who's life is shit, for whichever reason that may be, life has a lower value because in this case life is being related to agony, suffering and pain.

As a right to life- as in- you have the right not to be murdered or abandoned to starve- all life SHOULD be treated the same. But sadly- even then it isn't!! Look at the differences in media coverage and public response when people go missing. Look at the Gabby Petito story. Of course- it's not to belittle what she, or her poor parents went through but that became global news. Do you think it would have gotten the same coverage if it had been a middle aged black guy who had gone missing on holiday? Do you think a baby dieing of starvation in Africa is regarded the same as a baby left to starve in the 'developed' world?

'Worth' a 2021 film was interesting because it looked at the compensation people were fighting to receive after 9/11. How much is a life actually worth? Should all lives be compensated for the same amount? It was a while ago I saw it but it was interesting.

But- you're right. People do react differently to young suicides. Especially children. All that missed potential and all that. I suppose there is also the idea that older people have more of a grasp on who they are, what options they've tried and what's still available to them. Also- that they're supposedly more psychologically and emotionally 'mature' so- supposedly better equipt to make that decision. I think it's an unfair assumption but I think people often view young suicides as naive and impulsive- so- tragic and the 'wrong' decision basically. Plus- I suppose older people feel more comfortable challenging the behaviour of youngsters- rather than their peers- or elders.

What REALLY gets my goat is their refusal to accept what the person feels about themself. So- it will be:

'You're life has intrinsic value'. We'll respond- 'I don't believe in that... we all have rights- yes- and those rights need to be respected and protected but that's different to 'value'. Paramount in those rights (to my mind) is our right to choose. Even to make the 'wrong' choice- so long as we are of sound mind and we aren't hurting anyone else. (Yes- ok- suicide does hurt other people emotionally.) Intrinsic value seems to imply a gift from God. Not all of us believe in God... If not- then this 'value' belongs to us- surely it is our CHOICE as to what to do with it? Otherwise- surely you are implying that our lives don't belong to us?!!'

'But everyone has talent and potential'. Maybe- we all have varying amounts of it though. What if you are particularly gifted in something people don't find useful anymore- and don't want to pay for? My experience- being creative in this world isn't easy. Most of our jobs have been taken by computers.

'But you owe it to society/God/your parents to live and flourish.' Do we? Did we sign a contract saying we would? Did we get the choice to be born into this society? To these parents? No- they made that choice. They MAY have invested heavily in us- but now, they just expect us to perform and be happy and grateful about it- but we're simply not! So- I guess many of us will just either give our all and maybe fail. Give a half arsed effort and likely fail or- not try at all- either because we can't or won't and definitely fail- at 'expressing our worth.'

There's that as well- what about people who have incredible gifts in life but squander them? Too much alcohol, smoking and drugs- so- they kill themselves slowly. Why don't they go and have a go at them? Oh NO- their CHOICE needs to be respected!

I think everyone should do what's best for them and not anyone else because the moment you try to make decisions based on other people's happiness or approval then that's where the problem lie. It's your life so you should do what you want and what's best for you.

I mean- I agree- in terms of- it should always be the best qualified candidate that gets the job. Still- I suppose this idea of 'equality' came about because there probably were and still are prejudices against people- for various reasons- even if they are perfectly capable if doing the job.

Still- I do know what you mean. I've seen jobs in my industry where they specifically asked for racial minorities to apply. That actually IS prejudiced in the opposite direction. Imagine if an employer put: 'Only white people please.' They'd likely be sued!!

yup. you dont see anyone talking about the old or the useless people that ctb. If you are of no use to others then their empathy dwindles very fast. The reality is that everyone in this world is selfish as fuck and only after themselves. People only talk to you when they want something or expect something, even if it doesnt look like it at first, if someones trying to "help" theyre likely just hoping for it to be a long term investment that they will benefit from later on. Make no mistake, governments mainly attempt to prevent ctb because ctb costs them a lot in terms of lost tax revenue.

I cannot stand those pro-life platitudes which say things like "your life has value so suicide is never the answer", honestly that toxic positivity is so replulsive as none of us are obligated to continue existing and it's up to the individual when to leave, I don't see anything valuable about enduring this futile process of slowly dying, existing is just meaningless to me and it would had been better if I was never burdened with existence in the first place as I just see existing as being an undeserved punishment, it's something so harmful being trapped here.

But if other people want to endure this dreadful existence then that's fine for them, I just hate it when people push toxic positivity onto other people, like no you cannot experience existence in the same way so just mind your own business, wanting suicide is always perfectly logical in this world anyway and we are all going to die someday where everything will finally be forgotten about.

Even if these people are aware of their own hypocrisy, they will end up continuing with this narrative. this is an ideal, but not a reality and therefore they will not stop being talked about.

I believe that value is relative and therefore needs culture and values to be defined in anything. If people are caring more about minorities these days, then inevitably they're going to pay a lot more attention to them.
People are entitled to occupy the space they do no matter how special they may or may not be. That's how I understand it.

It's funny that even Yellow September came about because of the death of a specific teenager and not because people were really aware of what happens to suicidal people.

even when people actually show that they "care" about someone it is for a selfish reason indeed. When they show interest in it, it's not because they respect ideas, but precisely to try to impose that the person should live. It is a complex and complicated world.
