I'm actually quite surprised your therapist said such a thing, I don't think I'd meet such an openminded therapist, even after years of searching.

Because of my bad experiences with mental health professionals, though, I doubt the therapist is being truthful, meaning, they actually mean what they said but hopefully they were telling the truth about how they feel. I'm happy for you.

Man, I love therapists who do that. I remember my therapist told me something similar like that.

We were basically speaking about life purpose and how I was feeling my life lost meaning. He basically told me my options were to come up with my own meaning or just kill myself, and that was actually more motivational for changing my perspective than anything else he could've told me.

My therapist tells me this all the time, but in the context of treatment…it drives me crazy!

I doubt the therapist is being truthful
Yeah I don't know for sure but it was refreshing because I had a PHP therapist try to talk me out of it once and they were like "think of all the things you'll miss out on" and I was like if it's anything like the rest of my life has been I will not miss anything at all lol

That is very respectful and compassionate, it's surprising seeing a therapist so accepting of the fact that we have a right to die in such an anti-choice society.

What my therapist has said to me is that dying is still my choice, and really, its not something they can really take away. But they don't want that to happen, so they want me to come to them and try to get better and stop feeling that way. But it still is a choice, and my choice alone.

A crisis worker told me something similar once. She said that her experience was that once someone made up their mind 100 percent that they wanted to die nothing would stop them. They can't be talked out of it at that point. She told me that she hopes that I wouldn't decide to go through with it, but in the end the final decision is yours. You can decide whether you want to live or die. Nobody else can make that decision for you. If you really want to die, you will. If you want to live, you will do whatever you have to do.It won't be easy. You will have to put the work into it.

I wish more therapists like that existed.
All therapists did for me was tell me to "be more confident and have a happier outlook on life" and then put me on medication that made my situation 10x worse and made me lose physical and mental capacity.

My previous therapist had a similar attitude. She said "I understand if you kill yourself, but it would be unfortunate."

My therapist now thinks I'm spoiled. He's not wrong, but that can't be all there is to being suicidal. He thinks that I just have to trust him and commit to change, but I've had enough of life. He thinks I have t tried already. I'm bad at articulating myself, so I do look lame and spoiled when I can't totally explain myself. He can talk circles around me cause my thoughts are so disorganized, but it's just a fact that I'm chronically suicidal. /vent
