Non-existence does still grant the absence of all meaningless punishment for consumption of entertainment which I find to be meaningful even without awareness of it as peculiar as that may be regarded. To me, not experiencing is the ideal that should have been kept to begin with and the arrangement of a return to that state sooner rather than later is the closest compensation possible.
This is why I find it strange when I read about "finding peace" when there is nothing to be found in death. We do not get to strike "dying" off of our list when we die, because frankly there is likely no "self" to be cognizant of the fact that we have died. It is such an ugly truth and I find that it to be such a waste. Everything we've learned and all of the love that we had, cease to be. We take nothing with us but a part of our surviving loved ones when we die. Self-awareness may have been an evolutionary boon (because who can deny the advantage of being both programmer and machine) but it is a certainly a curse.
The "peace" may be referring to the absence of anything disturbing, which is included in one's death, or in other words, the commenced permanent cessation of one's perspective and everything it could perceive, it is however misleading to suggest anything is experienced after annihilation of the mind.
Self-awareness can indeed be regarded as a curse, because while it enables control over the management of one's body which initial existence and properties fundamentally cannot be controlled by oneself, similarly to how you can choose to act in accordance with what you want but not choose what it is you want, it also enables awareness of all existential troubles, placing importance on purpose over performance in a reality that favors performance over purpose. Many point to a loss of potential in the temporary nature of all things, but I think this potential is dependent on the meaning of what purpose is fulfilled, nothing pointless becomes less pointless depending on whether that lasts eternally or not.
However, self-awareness can also be considered a blessing in the jestingly cruel reality as the ability to be aware of life's futility provides greater control over choices and investments as opposed to doing whatever on some coincidentally set path in blind ignorance without ever thoughtfully assessing the progress or results, unwanted outcomes aren't more wanted because they transpire unrecognized, conversely, wanted outcomes aren't less wanted because they transpire unrecognized.
