Out there in normieland, I think men are more likely to choose guns and hanging whereas women choose pills. But I was wondering if there is a difference here.

What is your sex and which method are you considering?

Interestingly, I wanted to add a bunch of males over 30 yo to my friendslist here cuz I thought we would have more in common. In under a week, at least 2 of them actually caught the bus. I wonder if males under 30 here are more likely to CTB though because they are a high-risk group.

Female here, planning on a lethal overdose. Hanging and firearms are way too blunt for me, I hate how in my final moments I'll be deafened by the gunshot or the asphyxiation.

I prefer peacefulness over effectiveness.

If guns are easily accessible where I live, I'd do that, with a silencer. Easy. But nah not possible
Now, still doing research and planning. Efficacy & less mess/doesnt involve/burden other people would be perfect for me
As of now, options; N (near impossible to obtain rn), SN, IG, or hanging

not sure about this site specifically, but women tend to opt for less lethal methods like overdosing, whereas men will often choose to use firearms to CTB. women attempt suicide more often than men do, but men use deadlier methods and are overrepresented in suicide statistics as a result.

personally, as a woman, i've opted for ingesting SN. i live in a country with very strict gun control, otherwise i would've chosen to use a firearm.

I'm pretty sure that this site specifically would have completely different outcomes. A lot of attempts happen impulsively or at least without too much consideration. That's also why so many attempts fail.

Researching in a forum means that people here are rationally seeking a method of good balance between peacefulness and reliability. Also, I think, the success rate for attempts of SaSu members is higher than in an overall statistic

On this site specifically, I don't think there's much difference. Methods like SN are fairly universal. But compared to the general population, we're also inclined to put more thought and effort into our choices here, more so than grabbing a gun from the closet or a bunch of pills from the cupboard. All generalisations, of course.

I don't tend to see as much of a difference between the methods males and females use here as other places make it out to be. Although in terms of physical methods, I tend to read males going more for firearms and jumping in front of vehicles, with females going more for hanging and wrist cutting.

I'm male, tried to do jumping before but couldn't go through with it. I've tried doing way more oral overdoses than I have physical methods. Next attempt will be an oral overdose, but this time with stuff that can actually make me CTB (barbiturates + benzos and hopefully an opioid).

I would assume that because there are only a few methods here that are widely accepted to be successful, the distribution would be less obvious. But I'm still curious to see. Maybe you can make a poll?

Anyways: Transfem,19,SN

I don't really think that there is a link between gender and suicide methods. The factors that determine what method someone is using depends on accessibility which is of course linked to what country one lives in. I think the whole idea that there is a link between gender and suicide methods is based around stereotypes rather than reality, and anyway pills aren't a reliable suicide method.

Usually those who have a failed OD attempt did it out of desperation, ignorance of how to succeed in ctb and limited access to method resources, it's not because of gender. I'm pretty sure that most people try to find the most peaceful suicide method that they can when doing research and I bet that if Nembutal was easily available then most people would go for that regardless of gender. This is because with the more peaceful methods it's easier to overcome the survival instinct, it's certainly very unfortunate how we exist in an anti suicide society that restricts more reliable and peaceful method options.

I don't see a link between gender and methods. If anything, it depends on the accessibility of the method. I'm a female and I don't mind overdosing or shooting myself in the head. Unfortunately, neither is accessible in my country which is why I'm still alive. Though this is an interesting question. I'm sure if Nembutal was accessible, regardless of gender, everyone would want that method.

18NB, I'm going out with SN. Not scared of death. Just scared of pain and would like my last moments to be peaceful. I assumed most would want to go out this way.

Female and when I was a kid I always wanted to go by slitting my wrists. Thankfully I learned how easily this method is to fail before I tried. Now I dream of going from fentanyl but that's near impossible. I've decided to try and get sn. If I can't, then I'll jump.

According to studies that I'm too lazy to source, men vaguely lean towards unreversable, immediate, and violent methods versus women liking overdoses, poisons and blood flow(ie hanging, wrists).

Now as we've seen on this thread and as the study readily admits, you're gonna get different results based on culture, technology, and current events. This is the best example of the research not matching reality:
i'm female and will be using sn but i would use a gun if i was able to acquire one.
And here's the other side of the coin. I also fall under here for sn:
27 male lethal overdose

41, male, carbon monoxide

30M, I want to go peacefully with SN.

I wish it could look like an accident, I don't want to cause my family pain.

Apparently, more women make attempts, but more men succeed, because we use more violent methods.

I mostly overdose, with large quantities of prescription medication.

Spot on bro. Your two statements perfectly show the contradiction between study and reality. You overdose when the study says you should either shoot yourself or hang.

i dont think thats true, there are gender differences between methods( or attempted methods, im not sure), atleast in the US, men for example use firarms a lot more than women do
i agree with the rest though, i saw a statistic, not sure how reliable it is, that a vast majority of attempts were planned in less than 5 minutes or something ridiculous, it seems to be an impulse decision for the variety of cases and the consequences of that undoubtedly affect the image of everyone who wants to CTB

If I do it, it's going to be my severing my radial and ulnar arteries with an axe because that's all I have access too. Either that or I'll walk 60km to get to the falls and take one last dive. I love swimming..
